A couple of questions. Getting ready to put the heads on with new Felpro head gaskets 8548PT-2
I bought new old stock head bolts Clevite 216-7038. One of the shorter bolts has sealer in the threads and has a threaded section above the nut. My old bolts did not have one like this. Where does it go?
None of my threaded head bolt holes seem to penetrate the water jacket or oil gallery. Is thread sealer needed?
do I need to paint the head gaskets with high temp paint before I install? Seen varying opinions on this.
Not sure on the studded head bolt. I put a little motor oil on the threads when installing heads, No sealer. I always use the Permatex copper gasket spray on my head gaskets and have never has any issues.
Here is a pic of the head bolt kit from fleabay. The one with the threaded top has sealer tape on it. All the Clevite 302 kits I have found are set up like this.
That double-studded bolt looks too short to be a head bolt, at least from your picture. Compare it to the other 4 short bolts, and see that neither of the threaded sides are as long as the stud side of others. And it looks too short for a main bearing bolt as well. What's its diameter?
If it IS a head bolt, the side with the sealant is the LOWER side, and goes into the block.
The early small blocks (60's) do not need the sealer on the lower (shorter) bolts, but the later (forgot which years they started) blocks do. If you're not sure, it won't hurt to use the sealer on a block that doesn't need it.
Called the machine shop that bored the engine they got an older guy there he said it was usually for a ground strap and to put it up front where you could get at it...or in my case where it is going in an E100 in the back I guess....
not on my truck. Someone replaced the battery cables and attached to a different point on the block. I’m going to be out working on the truck so I’ll snap a pic a bit later.
That's an exhaust manifold bolt, not the head bolt that ecumscumguy was showing. On my 87 Mustang, there was such a double studded bolt on the manifold, and it was used for holding a bracket on the dipstick tube, which went into the side of the block. If a cable was bolted to that, I'd worry about insulation being burned up by the heat from the exhaust.
On the double studded head bolt, I'd worry that whatever is bolted to it might loosen it up.

Those long bolts look like the newer torque to yield bolts. The odd bolt would be for a ground strap, otherwise you'd be missing one bolt. The bolts that needed sealer were on the later 1980's blocks, their lower bolt holes intersected the coolant jackets.
