I’m looking at an 04 6.0 Lariat crew fx4 to buy from an acquaintance. It has 186k miles and is pretty clean on the inside, it has a rough paint spot on the front quarter panel, but that’s a not a big deal. She’s letting me get it for $5,900 so it seems like a steal as of now. I’ve had 2 rangers and a Silverado in the past, but this would be my first diesel purchase so I want to know what I should look at before buying.
I have a 2007 6.0 PSD with 184,000 miles on it, I bought the truck new in 2007. In 2018 I had it bullet proofed and the heads also needed to be replaced, this cost me 16K so think very carefully about buying that "deal", this will be my last diesel when this one finally dies!
Head over to the 6.0 forum and look in the tech section. There are some posts there with advise on what to look for when considering a used 6.0. Very valuable info if you do not know these engines. $5900 is a ridiculously low price for that truck if it is in good mechanical and cosmetic shape. There may be more to it than meets the eye. If you know how to turn a wrench and aren't afraid to do so, you could possible be getting a truck with many years of good service in it. Or you could be buying your worse nightmare. From what little I have learned your biggest concern is how the previous owner kept up the preventative maint. Good luck and remember...You have been warned. LOL
Everyone heard of the man who bought a truck from a used car salesman. The salesman told him the most wonderful story. Wow!! That truck sure is something. So he bought it.
After he got the truck home and problems started happening, he went back to the salesman and asked: "Could you please tell me that story again?"
A 2004 6.0L with 186,000 miles can be your worst nightmare.
Diesels are high maintenance beasts and problems can get very expensive. Like horses they're sometimes the lord's way of saying you have too much time and money on your hands
