Steering Noise
Always Something....We are getting ready to go on an 1800 mile trip and now my steering is making steady dull whine when I am turning...parking and other slow stuff.

are you familiar with a power steering bleeding process in which you turn the truck on and off while going throughout the entire range of the steering.
i'd go for at least a 1 to two mile trip and heat up the engine and fluids etc. before trying it but that's just me.
Step one : with engine running in and STOPPED in Park, Turn the wheel completely to the Right till it hits the bump stops and shut off the engine for about two minutes
Step two : start engine and keep it in park and turn the wheel completely to the left and shut off the engine for another two min.
Step three : start the engine up and center the steering wheel and check the fluid.
this procedure simple just gets the air out of the system and I hope it helps you out, and i hope it inst the gear box i thought i would be saving money having a truck with a separate gear box and not having a steering rack but when i looked up the prices i was sorta shocked to see them over 500 dollars

If you have access to two jacks, jack the front axle up so the tires are off the ground and with the engine running cycle the steering wheel back and forth about 20 times lock to lock and check the fluid in the reservoir as you do this. If it still acts up you have a weak pump or hydroboost issue.
