51-52 electric wiper

Guys been looking at the electric wiper on the floor so decided to tear into it and see if it worked. I have it cleaned and working but it doesn’t appear to be working as it should. Both sides spin but the pivot with the little button switch doesn’t do anything, it just spins in one direction until power is removed or the switch is turned off? It seems like when the rider goes over the button something should happen or that is where it should stop?

It has been a while since I've gone through my electric wiper setup, but that switch is involved in parking the wipers. If my recollection is right, the black button overrides the wiper control switch and powers the motor until depressed, stopping the motor parking the wipers. It does not change direction of the motor if that is what you were expecting.

Be sure to open up the gearboxes and check that you have good fresh grease and not hardened gunk. Also check that the plastic gears have not degraded or are cracked.

One i had would only Park about half the time. Some tweaking of the ramp that pushes on the button fixed it. You can remove the switch portion, but before you do, check to see if pushing the button breaks the circuit between the two leads.

Thanks Ross. I played with it on the bench, seems real finicky, works 50% of the time etc. Gonna pass on the electric setup and stay with vacuum. Will put it aside for later/rainy days.

Mine stripped the driven gear on the RH side years ago. A new motor from the Ford dealer was $45 so I passed on that and found one at a wrecking yard. The RH gear in it was also stripped, so forced it back together with a LH (different cut) gear and it still works, even the parking switch. Mine has metal gears in it. - Bob

Electric wipers for 51 thru 52 ? I thought the wipers were vacuum operated. Maybe an upgrade for a 5 star cab ? Im Always learning something here.

@rdemilt In 51 and 52, the electric wipers was an option and outfitted in 5 Star Cabs. I've upgraded all my trucks to the electric motor. They are pretty rare to find.

Not sure if ALL of them were dealer installed, but most I've seen appeared to be. I don't know how you could drill the holes without pulling the windshield? Mine are "off" a little, maybe because they didn't pull the windshield?

The original gaskets had a hole in them, guessing for excess grease to squeeze out. I didn’t add that hole to my gasket paper so guessing I compressed grease into the motor fouling the armature and brushes when I tightened down the gear housing covers. Quirky thing and time to move on to other projects.

My F3 is not a 5 star cab but, it did have the electric wiper. Not sure if factory or dealer installed. I'm the 2nd owner. Original owner passed away so I didn't get any information about upgrades or modifications that had been done.

I do know that 53-56 bigger trucks came with some things standard that smaller trucks had to order as an extra cost option.

My understanding is that in 1952, the Five Star Cab was standard equipment. The optional Five Star "Extra" added the door panels, passenger side sun-visor and door lock, locking glove box, extra seat cushioning, door buttons for the interior light, etc. The '52 Big Trucks had a headliner with perforations, maybe extra cab insulation too. I have one of those in my F1 that came from an F8. - Bob
