I recently bought this box (in black) and a top box from a buddy for 50 bucks. Honestly, the have seen better days, how much damage needs to be there for them to replace it?
Say . . there is a tradition around this house that the "Cool new toy/tool" get's to spend the first night in the house (so we can "admire it").
Are you allowed to do that? Is it in the middle of the livingroom yet? Don't forget to set it on a rug so you don't get in trouble for scratching the floor!
...WHEW...!!!
Im glad Im not the only one....My harley parked in the living room for the first 6 months I owned it...until I got nailed in traffic. S'ok though...I was getting tired of the taste of gas/oil in my meatloaf anyway...
I got a 36" wide (approximately) road box for FREE last weekend. It's a Craftsman as well. As for painting it, well, it does need paint. (It was a freebie, remember?) I don't know how old the thing is, but my friend's dad was cleaning out his garage (he sold his house) and asked me if I wanted to come by and take some stuff. It was formerly used as a carpenter's tool box evidenced by the hole cut in the lid to make room for a square. The two latches are mint. The top handle is mint. The two side handles are mint. The lid has a hole, and needs paint. I say screw the warranty, and paint it. I'll plug the hole with something. Maybe weld it shut.
I grabbed the thing because the road box I have now won't let my torque wrench lie flat, and won't fit my 2 longer prybars. Plus, it's nice to have the extra room to find stuff.
I also grabbed a 2 gallon gas can for free. The rest of the stuff was grabbed by other people, or was junk.
I just got a 12 drawer roller base, and 10 drawer top. They're both craftsman professional. Only costed me about $1500. I love it frankly.
Seeing how it has twice the storage capacity as the $7-10k snap on or mac tool boxes. I'd probably have to spend about $15k to get a similer tool box from snap on.
And i'm really not impressed with what the extra money gets you from snap on.
But i have a 20 year old 5 drawer base, and 15 drawer top from craftsman that has just sat in a dank basement its whole life. But it still looks pretty new.
DO you guys know if it's ANY craftsman box? What I mean by this is I have an old Craftsman HomeShop box that is in pretty bad condition that I would love to get replaced. I'm hoping that it's not just the pro boxes that are warrantied.
Craftsman had a sale on their rollaways and I just bought the lower 8 and upper 12 drawer chest. They were the middle of the road one and cost me about 450.00 for both. I could of bought the cheaper model and got a free middle drawer but I liked the bigger lower unit better. But I've also had their smaller carry boxes and loved them also, I just bought a plastic one at Menards for $1.00 and all the tools that would fit inside were 30% off.
You must have been one of the lucky ones. I went to 3 local Sears stores and they all tell me there is no lifetime warranty on any of their tool boxes.
I was hoping to be able to slip one through at one of the stores but no luck...oh well. Guess I have to shell out the cash for a new one.
If you currently have a Craftsman box you probably allready know this, but Waterloo Industries builds Craftsman boxes. Waterloo offers a lifetime warranty on their boxes. Sears store employees aren't trained on this aspect though. If you need parts for your box find an older, knowledgable associate and they will contact Waterloo for you.
Oh, it is helpfull if you buy tools at the store on a regular basis.
I bought a 50" ball bearing top back in 1999 to "upgrade" These normally have a 36" wide 5" tall drawer which I replaced with 2 short drawers for more usable space.
Buddy of mine ran his rail buggy into my bottom part of my craftsmen box and pinned it against the wall put a nice dent in it but all drawers would still open fine but they still replaced it. He talked that deal out though.

The above is directly from Waterloo's website. I have emailed them with the direct question of what the warranty is on the Craftsman line. I am hoping the Craftsman line has a different warranty than Waterloo's own line.
Like so much else, Craftsman toolboxes have gone down hill. I have a three drawer I bought several year ago and was looking at the new ones lately. They've gotten way flimsier - just like many of thier power tools. I think you have to go up to thier top or third tier of quality to get something that will last now.
I do have to say, that I did buy a three drawer toolbox at Sears this weekend. They were clearing out thier NFL labeled ($49) toolboxes for $18. It's not as strong as my old one, but for $18 I can't really complain.
This is a direct email I received from Waterloo regarding the craftsman boxes.
"Hi Tom,
Thank you for your iterest in Craftsman tool storage. You'll think I'm
skirting the issue, but the warranty on these is Sears' standard
warranty.
The only warranty we have with Sears is on the Professional Series.
Sears does put a warranty on the others, but I'm not sure if it is 30 or
60 days?
I would ask that question of Sears if you would. Thanks so much."
