Me neither; like all IDI's; when factory new the correct dynamic marks at 3 o'clock match perfectly although the "assembly" 12 o'clock ones may be a bit off. Had my original IP rebuilt a month ago and rematched the 3 o'clock marks and it runs like the day I bought it in '91.
... there are no Dynamic marks on the pump, only static.
If you take a break from balancing "countless" driveshafts, and take a look, you'll find another set of matched marks on every IDI pump to gear housing----at 2-3 o'clock.
Straight quote from a Navistar shop manual:
Dynamic timing marks @ 10 o'clock must be aligned. Static timing marks @ 12 o'clock may be misaligned as long as the 10 o'clock marks are aligned. Later production engines have the 12 o'clock mark on the pump flange removed. Service pumps will continue to have a 12 o'clock mark as a reference starting point.
NOTE: The manual says 10 o'clock since they're viewing the pump from the REAR in the pic provided.

Not sure what this is all about but probably best to ignore.
I never claim to be anything, just share what I've done and what's worked for me, both in a pinch and doing it right. Each to their own. I'm happy with my truck the way it is and everyone else can be too.
well, he on my blocked Luser list... so I don't see his posts unless others Quote him
but I agree with what you say DOC .... always negative with that one there is.........
IF you want I send you a PM for the "Air Timing" .... but it is easy to get it from the Stanadyne Dealer Portal....I have full access
Sure, feel free to send me goodies like that anytime you want, I downloaded alot of stuff from there portal years ago for my book but that wasn't one of them. I have a thick binder that's basically everything on my truck, the only thing I don't have is a rear end manual. Pump, motor, wiring, trans, xcase, front axle, ect I all have. Always looking to add things to that collections. I also have some tsbs for it. The illusive one about the filter head bypass hose I have yet to find but it would be an interesting read.
your 87 probably does not have an overdrive trans, so it will be limited to about 70-75 mph top speed anyway.
my 88 with the 7.3 engine, C-6 trans, 4.10 gears, and 37 inch tires has a top speed of 75 and it takes forever to get there. but it will run 50-55 all day long.
Unless the 6.9's were different than the 7.3's, the top marks mean nothing, they were used during factory assembly. The actual dynamic timing marks are at the 3-4 o'clock position if you look closely. Of course where they line up in regards to advanced or retarded timing only applies if the engine has the original IP.
That was something I saw on youtube so I gave it a try.
Line the marks up and try it, since you don't have the tools to properly time it, you'll have to do it by ear and by feel. No worry though, everyone's driving habits and engines are different, so I time everything by ear and touch. I've never bought anything timing related in my life..
DOC I tried to line the marks back up but that sucker was hard to turn. I was afraid of breaking something.

I have a piece of square steel tubing that bolts into the two holes in the upper driver side of the pump. Makes it easy to maneuver with a handle on it.

That may be the ticket right there, they make a tool for rotating these pumps, but I've yet to find one for s reasonable price
In stock form and in good tune the IDI's have respectable power. No, you won't pull that travel trailer up a steep grade @ 75mph, but you shouldn't be limping up it in the break down lane either. If you are there is something wrong with your engine; tired IP, injectors, timing, plugged air intake, etc.
Problem is these IDIs run so well even out of tune, with everything worn out they still start and run great, they just can't get out of their own way. But because they are running so well people assume the engine is just a dog and that's the way it is. In my opinion that's how the IDI gets a rep for poor performance.

Bad thing is, it's hard to turn due to the steel lines, unless you loosen them as best you can, if they're in enough of a bind, they'll crack over time.
