I just spent the last 45mins researching what I can do to get my truck to get into program mode to program a new fob. I only have 1 at the moment with 1 key so I know I can’t program the key, haven’t had it cut yet, but want to program the fob. I did the whole 8x off/on steps with door open, unlock pressed and even did the wiper thing I found. Nothing 😐.
Is my truck special on this as well ? It was pointed out that my truck with forscan couldn’t get 12v power outs to turn on cause of build date.
anyone have a way to get the truck into program mode ?
You need 2 functioning key fobs to self program another fob. If you don’t have 2 programmed and functioning fobs you will need to bring it to the dealership or an automotive locksmith.

From what I read that’s for the keys, to program a 3rd key you need 2 keys.
for fobs once you start the process it wipes all existing fobs from what I read. Most instructions also have a clause “if only programming 1 fob skip to step 5”.
Where did you get the above information? Is it for a Superduty? I am assuming the fob and the key are combined into one unit.
In the owners manual, it does say you need 2 keys to program a third key. It also states you need two fobs to program a 3rd fob which when they state fobs, they mean push start equipped trucks.
Back to the keyed trucks now. When programming a new key, it’s not the key itself that gets programmed, the buttons for the fob get programmed. The key itself doesn’t hold information. Since the manual states you need two keys to program a third, I take it as you will need the two keys to program the fob.
Check your owners manual, maybe I am wrong. It’s been known to happen now and again.

manual stated nothing. I just used all the search features here, google and YouTube for my year model & key fob found basically the same instructions.
so if the key stores nothing in theory I can swap the actual hard key to the old remote and truck should start as info is on key fob ?

Im not sure exactly how the keys work. I came from Rams which only had fobs and now I have a push start ford. I remember a long time ago in my high school years, I worked at an electronics store. The car installers there had to sometimes permanently install the spare key of a car in the command start module to get the command start to work. One installers told me the that the chip was in the plastic casing of the key and the key itself had nothing to do with it. I’m assuming it’s the same now as it was back then. It makes sense to me.
Try calling a dealer to see if it’s possible to program just the fob and ask how much it would be. If they says it’s possible, you know to keep looking for a free way to do it. If they say it’s not possible, you can stop wasting your time lol.

YOU MUST HAVE 2 PREVIOUSLY PROGRAMMED KEYS.
Being you only have one integrated key head transmitter you must either have a dealer or automotive locksmith do the programming. They will connect their computers delete all keys currently programmed into the trucks computer and program your 2 keys.

This why I always make then throw in a 3rd key as part of the purchase, so when I lose one I still have two. Of course I forgot to do this on the truck I just bought and have an e-bay fob on order
I really doubt any dealer will throw in one of the current / newer proximity fobs to get a sale especially one of the fobs than don’t have a key for the ignition.
