first i'd like to say hello everyone
my dad has a 93 f150 4x4, good strong truck. It has limited slip 3:55 front and rear axles. the yolk for the drive shaft on the rear end has more movement than usual when you shift from park to drive, reverse, ect. Its not the universals, they are fine and tight, I was wondering if this is like normal wear or if it is going to be a problem cause were looking to take a road trip thanksgiving weekend "hauling some quads on a trailer" and we dont want to get stuck. the truck has 122,000 miles but still pulls like a horse lol. should we be concerned more than normal? or if anyone has a fix for the problem "if it is"
You could ride in the back of the truck and see if the diff sounds ok. You can stop and feel the diff for heat after a run at hiway speed. You could change the diff oil and see if it has metal chunks in it. The diff has some play in it, called backlash.
the oil is new and we just replaced the cover, but didnt see any metal shavings in the punkin and it doesnt get hot, however the amount of slop that im describing is if you take a can of soup it will turn "slop" about 1/4 to 1/3 the diameter, on a circunference thats about 2 - 2 1/2 inches where normal slop isnt quit that much. It just seems to be alot more than normal, thought maybe a bearing might be going bad?
