Hey guys,
i picked up a 93 f250 na idi 7.3. Solid truck. Great body. Virtually rust free. Little low on engine oil. But overall very solid truck. Doing an oil change on today. Lookin to use the fl 1995 power-stroke filter for that extra quart, with 15w-40 synth. Unless someone has a better suggestion. Belt squeals on startup, gonna put a new one on today as well. Otherwise truck seems to be great. Little slow to startup i do think the glowplugs may be on their last legs. Plugged it in this time to see if it starts up with less struggle and smoke. Lol
The owner said he hadn't used the real fuel tank in quite some time, i do know its relatively empty, but this isn't a situation I've come across before. Is there an additive i can add in with a refill on that tank and hope i dont clog the filter or pump? I dont necessarily need that tank but id rather have it fixed. so i suppose what would the best route be for this?
on the topic of fuel, my pops used to always run some additives on every fill up, I've seen some mentioned here and there but curious what yalls favorites are. Just to add a dose of with each fill up.
Sorry for the long post guys, but will appreciate the help, just trying to get refreshed on these old motors. Haven't owned one but grew up on em so just trying to learn some tips and tricks to keep em rollin down the road.
Personally I never use any additives unless it's an anti-gel during winter and I know I have non-winterized fuel in my tanks. As far as a lubricity additive, all the refineries have added a lubricity formula starting in '91 when sulfur first started being deleted. I DID get a big slug of algae from a truck stop years ago and had to add an algaecide but that's another story. I've got right at 210,000 miles on my IP and just pulled it last week, shipped it to Oregon Fuel Injection to be resealed and recalibrated, etc. Pump was performing fine but finally developed fuel leaks at the light load advance piston seal and front shaft seal.
I run Lucas fuel treatment in my IDI. I add some at every fill up. My engine chatters less when I run additive, especially after filling the fuel filter with ATF.
He said he stopped because he never had a need to fill both. Seems like the rear is empty. Ive flipped it over to se eand it goes to quarter which is where my gauge stops working. Im curious if maybe i could just run it on like seafoam with a tank or something and be good.
i am another one in the no additives needed camp.
495,000 miles on the 88, and 294,000 on the 02. only additive ever added was anti gel when it got below zero, and the 88 get a fuel filter full of ATF once a year. start it idle for 30 seconds, then shut it off and let it set for 24 hours. then run it like i stole it to blow out all the crud the ATF broke loose.

Our shop dealt with the same injection shop so much I got to be on a first name basis with the owner. I remember him saying the only thing additives do is make your wallet lighter. But after me repeating that statement on a forum, an IDI "forum pro" assured me the owner said that so my pump would wear out and he would get to rebuild it. As far as running better after using a miracle in a bottle, a guy posted some people could put M&M's in their ash tray and swear it made their truck run better. I DO believe that statement.
Someone said to put the old tranny fluid in my off road diesel and it will clean the system too.
anyone know what ratio to add the atf to diesel tank or 5 gallons fuel can?
