So this one might be a longer thing so I apologize if it goes on a while. So last week I stopped at a pump and simply filled up with diesel. I’m driving home from work about 25ish minutes after filling and my truck starts sputtering as if it was out of fuel kinda. So I pull over and switch to my other tank thinking I got bad fuel or something. Maybe something got in my fuel filter from that fuel I’m not sure so I get a new filter. It looked a little old so it was time anyway. So today driving to work it did the same thing. Check engine light comes on but it doesn’t totally die so I limped it to work turned off the truck and just turned the key and no check engine light. Did my work for the day and got in and started her right up. No check engine light. I start driving home on the hour trip and about 10-15 minutes in light comes on and starts sputtering. So I skipped my other stops and limped it home and it made it with minimal sputters and with the light still on. When I got home I left it idling and went and got my code reader so the light didn’t go away. as soon as I plugged it in the Truck dies and of course the light goes away. I try to read the codes and it says no codes stored so I don’t even know what code it was. So I’m thinking a few things possibly and I’m planning to start tomorrow on it just wanted some other opinions
also after the first time last week my fuel pressure is always 10 psi lower. Example
It used to be 50 idling 60 downshifting and 40 WOT has been since I got it. And now it’s 40 idling about 50 downshifting and 30-32ish WOT
so I’m thinking possibly that tank I got maybe got something in my fuel pump and maybe messed it up?
or possibly I’m just paranoid about the fuel and I’m also curious if my hpop is quitting. I have a friend who can probably check it’s pressure tomorrow.
cant really think of anything else. It just seems like when it does it it’s not getting all its fuel. maybe ICP?
also it’s a 96’ f-350 with a ts 6 chip
any ideas for where to start would be appreciated. I plan on having my hpop checked tomorrow. That’s the hope anyway. Don’t have much diagnostic tools just my thoughts basically and so far this is where I’ve landed.
thanks for looking and apologies if this got a little dry lol I do need this back on the road as soon as possible tho so any help is appreciated. Thanks
Should have added this but the truck will fire right back up right now and drive no problem. It’ll just be once I get going. Probably not long because it’s getting worse so I’m thinking either fuel pump or hpop is starting to give in but I’ll try to learn more tomorrow
I think the code would be stored even if the you shut the truck down and cel goes out. What code reader are you using? Have you used it to pull codes on your truck before? My AE will pull stored codes after shut down.
I thought it would to but it says no codes stored. You’re probably right tho and I also think there’s codes there. The things is just a $50 pos from Walmart. Autolite brand or something like that. I’m gonna try to use my friends tomorrow he’s got a crazy nice one he got when his company got all new ones so he got a nice one for free lucky fella lol. I’m sure the codes are there also so hopefully I can get him tomorrow and figure out what code it was. That would definitely help me at least
I have used it on other trucks never needed it on this one. The other ones have always read well tho and I figured out the deal from it. I’m curious if it’s just the old system since it was the first years for obd-ll or if it’s a crappy scanner. Possibly both I wouldn’t be surprised
That will not read codes on these trucks. If you do a search on here you will see some of the code reader that will work. Like I said mine is AE with the ford bundle. Some guys with different readers will chime in.
Yeah just wondering what would be good. I’ll know more either tomorrow or Sunday and hopefully figure something out
Get a wirless bluetooth OBD2 adapter and download torque pro on your phone or tablet. And you can read codes and monitor engine parameters. Wireless obd 25$ torque pro 7$. Do some google searches on it for 7.3s
Hmm couldn’t find it for mine. I have an iPhone is it only for android?
I think forscan will work with an iPhone or droid. Ive tried several apps with my BAFX bluetooth adapter ($15 amazon) and droid phone. While they all have their perks I like forscan the best because it not only retrieves your codes but also gives possible routes of repair. I have a 95 f350 7.3ditd excab drwd and the BAFX forscan combo work great for me without a minutes trouble. Hope this helps
