I have a 1985 Ford Bronco 351w. I would like to take all the smog crap off of it. Anything special i need to do? I do believe this one
the egr goes to the pump but as this vehicle has headers there is
a valve that the hose out of the pump goes to the egr has a valve
in the middle of it and the bottom part is gone as i am sure this
was hooked to the stock exhaust manifold.
I took some of that stuff off my truck b/c the black tubes coming from the smog pump to behind the heads had broken off. I took off the pipe that connects the back of the heads and plugged the holes it left with some short bolts (the holes are threaded). There's also that pipe coming up from the cat, if you haven't done something with that already. I just took off the pipe and grinded off about six inches of it and took that little piece, mashed most of one end flat and folded it (where no air could get through), and put some muffler mender stuff in the little end that was left. Clamped that on the little steel tube that it was attached to in the first place and that plugged all the exhaust (coulda probably been done easier, but that's what I had available). Then you can just take all those black hoses running to that can and dump valve, and take them off as well. I left my pump on there, but I'll get on of those deleter wheels pretty soon, don't know if that thing can clog up with mud and become hard to turn, but I don't really see the need to find out.
I left the egr b/c they say it helps the engine run cooler at cruise speeds and it wasn't broken, which is why I had to do this to start with. Hope this helped a little. I think my truck likes not having that stuff on there anymore .
The smog pump injects fresh air into the catalytic converter as well as the heads. If removed, you are effectively removing that cat as well since without the air injection, the cat will never heat up the way its supposed to. This may or may not affect performance and driveablility. Keep in mind too, that if you remove it and local emission laws require it, you will have to put it back when its time for inspection and if you ever want to sell it...well unless you can find some poor sucker to buy it sans smog pump.
I wouldn't want to take it off for anything other than the fact it has already been modified as in headers and such and nothing
is hooked up to the system. and it has passed inspection. the
pump just runs and does nothing anymore. I was the dumb
sucker who bought it this way.
