Help looking to find out what if any frames would my 1966 2WD long Bed f100 bolt up to??
Up to 1979 the front half of the frame under the cab and forward are 100% bolt on. Because the shape of the bed changed on newer trucks, I had to raise the body and bed 1",( did this with hockey pucks at all the mounting bolts.) And I had to cut off a few inches on the rear end of the frame and add a cross member. I used a 2x3 channel iron for the cross member. Pretty simple, did mine in a weekend.
PS, If mine was a step side, (flare side), I would not have had to lift the body and bed. I doubt anyone would notice a step side bed being an inch high.
Agree with Eric, Basically all measurements are same 65-79 from the rear cab mount to front bumper. In 73 4in was added to the rear of the cab behind the can mount, extending the length of the chassis and wheel base. The rear axle was also lengthened to match the track of the front wheels, that was widened in 65 with the twin I-beam.
Short bed and long bed wheelbases:
65-66, 115" and 129"
67-72, 115" and 131"
73-79, 117" and 133"
The original poster asked about 66 but just for anyone else looking pre 65 cabs will not bolt right on to the newer frames. Nor will any 4x4 cab except for the 66 F100.
Some people are also bolting 1966 trucks onto 2003-2011 Ford Crown Victoria frames. I have never done it so you will have to search the internet.
ANY frame swap results in the loss of the V.I.N. that is on the frame of your truck. Many jurisdictions look at the frame V.I.N. only for registration purposes.
Eric with 4" added to the back of the cab in 73, I just can't imagine only one or two inches on a short 4x4 chassis, but I have never dealt with one.
John
You don't have to imagine anything, it's two inches longer on the shortbed wheelbase starting in '73. That's why the photo I posted of the '66 shortbed body mounted on a '79 shortbed 4x4 chassis has a larger gap between the bed and cab.
