I ran into the problem with mine but i am using poly tank from mid fifties. I ended up grounding the sending unit on the top of tank to frame. I also at one time had some issue with not registering properly and found that the sending unit was not moving with the fuel level. It had gotten stiff had to remove tank and free it up. I am running auto meter gauges and sending unit.

Did you measure your tank and configure the sender for that specific size tank? It sounds like the sender insertion depth is too short, the pivot point on the float arm needs to end up midway between the top and the bottom of the tank. I've replaced a sender in a 53 and one in a 56 and they were tricky to get just right. Good luck .
