Have 1996 F-150, 125,000 miles. Loses coolant slowly, noticed musty smell and saw it was wet under the carpet. Sound like a heater core going?? Has not been wet thru the carpet. If it is the core, is this a greatly involved project?? A buddy also said while I (or the mechanic) am down there I should have the a/c evaporator replaced, as it is the same labor to do it by itself possibly later down the line. Thanks in advance for any help !!
You can get to the heater core by splitting the box under the hood by the firewall. It really isn't such a big deal. As for the evaporator, you would have to charge down the freon before you can open the lines. If the A/C's holding a charge, I wouldn't mess we it. When you have the heater core case open, spray some Lysol into the plenum to take care of the musty odor.
The heater core is accessible from inside the truck . Remove the glove box , There is 7 or 8 screws to remove the cover to gain access to the heater core . Other than removing the hose clamps from the core under the hood , its all interior work .
Oh, shoot! You're right! There I go holding the manual upsidedown again. Sorry for the incorrect post. I forgot that I did go under the dash on my '77 F-250. As I recall, it was a little bit of a booger, but what was worst was the weather. Had to leave the door open in the middle of a snow storm. How else was I gonna get any heat?
I done this before on my 1994 F-150. It really isn't that hard except for getting to the screws that hold the cover on the core. Some of them are in tight places and require a short driver and/or socket, and some might need a longer driver to access them. I would test fit all of your tools first.
