Did my first fuel filter swap today. Took about 30 min due to being nervous as heck! I did purge the filters 6 times before cranking the truck up. So far I see no leaks 🧐
some fue did spill when removing the canister from the engine bay.
truck has 21k miles. Is this considered dirty?
Mine don’t look that dirty when I change them at 600 engine hour intervals but I have seen photos of them way more dirty. I think those are about the average level of dirty.
They look fairly normal to me. When I changed my filter last, mine were about the same.
This is a photo of the first time I changed mine at 43500 miles (bought it at 34500 miles so I don't know how many miles were on it). I also broke open the engine mounted filter and it was dark, but I don't know how the filter media looks when new.
I did mine a couple weeks ago - my filter at 17k looked similar to yours. I expected to spill a little fuel from the filter in the engine bay, so I surrounded it with a couple shop rags to mitigate that situation.
unfortunately, I must have not gotten one of the 3 hoses on correctly. When I went to purge/prime the system, i heard one of them pop off, Diesel sprayed all over the place. So my planned 30 minute job became a 2 hour cleanup process...
Other than that, a really simple job - next time I'll make sure I get those hoses on all the way.

that sucks! How did you clean it up? Water? Degreaser? Wipe?
Keep buying fuel wherever you have been since it looks clean!
Right? If I laid it flat it looked perfectly white. I'm almost considering buying a larger fuel tank just to ensure I can always get fuel where I prefer to get it and not get stuck buying fuel because I need it... Seeing how clean that filter is from buying fuel mostly at my local station, makes me a little warm and fuzzy.

wiped up wet spots, then misted some Simple Green all over the place. Then a gentle mist of hot water thru the hose to rinse the Simple Green. Then backpack blower to dry everything wet. Pain the in a$$.
I didn't really want to spray under the hood but had to do something. I was careful to get everything very dry with the blower. I think I use my blower as a post-wash dryer of dirt bikes and vehicles more than I use it around the yard
