Hello this is my first post on the forum. I bought a 34 Ford project and it came with what I think is a 2001 Explorer 5.0 drivetrain. I have all the parts needed, wiring harness, ecm, and all the sensors. It has GT40 heads and distributorless with the coil packs. My concern is that all the wiring involved will make it unattractive and complicated in a street rod.
Can this engine be converted to use a distributor and the intake changed and carbureted?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, the stub inserted where the distributor goes is a magnetic pickup used for timing with the distributorless ignition system, so you just have to pull that out and plug in a distributor that works with whatever ignition system you want to use like points, duraspark, msd, etc.

Thats great news and I thank you for that. The A4OD transmission appears to be electronically controlled. Is there a way to make that work without the EEC4 processor or do I have to swap it for an earlier model transmission?
There may be a stand alone controller for that trans (4R70w) but it won't be cheap. Using the factory PCM is an all or nothing type situation, you have to keep the EFI on the motor as well as add some vehicle specific pieces if they cannot be eliminated with tuning.
How did you handle the serpentine belt drive. I have the same type of project going electronic to distributor and carb. No AC or power steering. I know your post is from 2020 but I just came upon it. Thanks for any info you can share.

With the distributor I will have to make a new bracket to relocate the AC compressor if I use the carb and distributor. Still on the fence on which way to go.
The EEC-V controlling that drivetrain package is superior in all respects to any carbureted junk that’s got distributor ignition. I have several hot rods all running Ford injection with EDIS, it is fully tunable and dead reliable.

I have an 86 F-150 and all I did was take all the drive belt setup off of the old engine and swapped it over to the 01 5.0. It runs like a champ and has been for the past 4 years. It seems to have a bit more pep in it's step.
