Rebuilding a 351W to put in my 83 Cherokee (last year of the big, body on frame Cherokees). Its a non roller early 90's vintage, and I put GT40P heads on. The stock dizzy is still in the engine, mostly to keep easy eye for TDC, see below
Can this dizzy be made to run a non FI engine or should I look for something else and I really don't want to run a HEI dizzy.
The EFI distributor has no vacuum nor centrifugal advance; it's all controlled by the EEC. If you have a way to replace those with whatever you're using, it should be possible. The distributor has a magnetic pickup whose signal you can send to an ignition controller as a trigger, which will determine the spark advance based on running conditions to light the spark, like the EEC-IV does. But if you don't have that, you should probably get something like a DuraSpark II distributor, which has vacuum and centrifugal advance, and just needs a DS-II ignition module to fire a coil. But you need to make sure the gear is compatible with the cam.
There may also be an issue with the length of the distributor shaft that engages with the oil pump drive shaft. The EFI version on the 302 is longer than the non-efi version. Don't know if that's the case with the 351 version.
Yeah the easy way is to go Dura Spark II Ign. The cost is not that much. You can get a re-man dist. and the rest of the parts you can just buy new.
You will have to do some wiring and splicing but there are plenty of posts on the net showing you how to do all this.

This is only a problem when using a heavy duty oil pump drive. With the stock shafts, there's no issue
