Poor Man's Coyote PS bracket

So one of the downsides to a coyote swap is the cost compared to a LS. Some of the extra cost are do to the aftermarket not being as large as the LS. The real kicker is a power steering pump. The only way to get a cheap power steering pump bracket is to give up air conditioning. I decided that there was no way I would spend 600 -1200 dollars for a machined bracket. I also decided I would try and make a bracket that anyone with a drill and a grinder could make. Lucky for me Ford Racing put the CAD of the coyote out to suppliers and someone posted it on Grabcad. The only downside is it is CAD of the mustang while I have the F150 version. I also cannot use my works CAD software because they would then own it and I could not share it. I ended up using Fusion 360. It is great for free but also frustrating because all software has a learning curve and I find myself looking for tools I use regularly at work but do not exist on 360. So enough with backstory.

The F150 coyote before I started

Doing a little CAD cardboard added design.

Grinding down the pedestal for the idler pulley. Unfortunately I was unable to keep the idler or the tensioner.

I will add more slowly. As a heads up I have ran my set up and as of April 2020 I probably have 500 miles on it with no problems so far that are show stoppers.

So I have seen a few home brew pump set up that worked but used a small pump pulley. I looked at using a 4.5" diameter power steering pulley because the clearance was nice but if I spun the motor over 7k (I will) the pump's RPM would be over 10k... The pump may handle it but I would not consider it good for longevity. So I ended with a little over a 6" diameter pulley. I was also unable to retain the idler or tensioner... makes everything more challenging. I could mount a tensioner on a custom bracket but everything I was coming up with would require a mill at a minimum to produce and that would not help the coyote become more affordable. Then I had a thought while working on the mustang engine model. The mustangs run the AC with single use stretch belt. They can be a pain but have been used for many years proving they work. I looked up the gates belt for the mustang AC then used Gates website to see what other sizes they have in there stretch belt series. I then ordered the mustang belt and installed it to see the proper tension the the stretch fit belt. I also used the dimensions Gates gives for the belt and compared to the diameter belt in the mustang coyote CAD model. With the % stretch I was able to calculate the stretched belt length for PS pump.
For modifications to the timing cover I had to grind down the idler mount and tap the two standoffs. One is tapped to 10m-1.5 and the other is 8m-1.25.

Installing the mustang belt

Gates recommends this little gauge for belt tension.

testing the tension on the stretch fit belt.

Pump bracket modeled.

I had a problem with spacing compared to the CAD model. I am not for sure if the it was caused by error in my models or if the mustang timing cover is slightly different. For the time being I just added some washers but will get proper length spacers made once I get the correct measurements. I bought grade 10.9 metric threaded rod in 10m-1.5 and 8m-1.25 to make spacer studs.

Pictures of the pump setup.

I will add pics with reservoir once I take them.

Basic information:
  • Power steering pump is off a 1995 Camaro with a 5.7l
  • Belt is a K060392SF
  • Power steering pulley is a Dorman 300-130 for a Pontiac 2008-95 grand Prix
  • Power steering reservoir is a cheap BMW model off eBay. Search BMW ps reservoir and you will find it.
  • Bracket spacer lengths are 0.86", 1.54", and 2.635". Your milage may vary to check your belt. Mine was was within 10-30 thousand.
Pdf has basic dimensions and one sheet is a 1/1 scale someone can cut it out and use it to locate holes and make the bracket with a grinder and a drill.

I know some people would prefer a slotted bracket that can be adjusted but I wanted a design that could be made in anyone's garage. I may consider a slotted one down the road but if this design continues to work well I will probably not mess with it. I may look into a supercharger version if I go that route but do not hold your breath.

CAD files link
Anyone is more than welcome to make their own version or improve on the design. Feedback and new designs are more than welcome.

Nice job, I must be living in the dark ages as I had never heard of a stretch fit belt. But didn't the F-150 come with a pump? Or have they went to electric also? Thanks for sharing your hard work.

Thanks!

The 11+ f150s are electric assist rack and pinion. I got the stretch belt idea because that is what the 11+ mustangs used for the ac compressor belt.

Time for an update.I have over 5-10k miles on the pump and have not had any major problems. The pump is also running a hydroboost. All is not perfect though.

The pump does leak some from the main shaft. I assume this is because it is a cheap remanufactured pump. I bought a new pump but it was not reverse rotation even though it said it was. That was a frustrating day. You can put some oil in it and see what way it is flowing prior to installation. I suggest doing this.

I have looked into buying a aftermarket performance pump but they use bearings instead of bushings and that would not work with the pulley I have. Changing to a different pulley means I have to design a new plate. It's not great it leaks but has not been a show stopper so I keep running it as is.

Thanks for posting this up!
Any chance that you know the length of the spacer?

edit; I just noticed you had the dimensions in one of the posts.

Any recent updates on the power steering pump? I was told by Turn One to try and use a 84-96 LT1 Corvette pump. Do you know your PDF bracket would also work on with the Corvette pump as well as the Dorman pulley?

Still works fine even though the current pump I use leaks. Have purchased multiple "new" pumps from rock auto and they are never reverse rotation. Definitely spin it with a drill in a vise to verify it is correct. I bought a used one off eBay as a backup if my pump gives up.

THe Corvette pump uses a smaller pulley shaft so it will not work with the pulley I used. I think the pump would bolt to the bracket but the stretch belt would need the exact same size pulley.

I could not find a pulley with the same diameter as the one I used that would fit the smaller Corvette pump shaft. If I had it to do over again I would use the Corvette pump since those are available aftermarket.

I have not other than getting a quality rebuild pump. The one I had always leaked and remanufactured ones I received had the wrong internals. The one on the truck eventually quit leaking and I bought a used one off eBay for a backup.

It powers my hydroboost and steering without any problems.
