The last time I got 10 mpg towing a camper was with a 2006 Cummins Dodge. I don't think I ever hit 9mpg with a gas engine and I used to get 8-9 with a 6.4 diesel. 10.5 makes me think you were going 55 mph or had a tail wind/drafting a semi.
All highway 65-70. Maybe if I slow it down a bit I could hit 12 lol
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm in the market for a new truck and trying to decide if I should go F-150 or the Ranger route. It's good to know that the Ranger can handle a 22-footer.
For what its worth on our first camping trip I tried out 93 octane. 516 miles total and I averaged 12.25 mpg. High of 12.4 and low of 12.1. This was 95% highway at 65-70.
Not too bad considering this time the truck was loaded with the fam and gear and the camper was loaded up with supplies and water. The 10.5 was empty camper and just the wife and me in the truck.
What has been you expirenc with the Redarc brake controller? Did you installor dealer install?
I love it. Super easy to use. If you follow the write up in the link I posted you can do it easily. It took me maybe an hour tops. It’s the trailer brake controller Ford of Australia uses and links into wiring that is already prepped for it in the truck
I have a very similar camper made by forest river and ive noticed its a bit more stable when loaded. Im thinking the extra weight takes the bounce out similar to an empty vs loaded pickup bed.
Well you are right about the parachute I think, can’t really do much about that.
I would eventually like to get a truck cap, but I don’t know if I’ll ever pony up the cash. Maybe it would help with towing the camper?
I do have a gator tonneau cover as well. Just to cover the bed and keep my stuff dry and concealed. The tonneaus don’t really offer any mpg gains vs wind unless you’re going about 75 plus, and at that point your mpg’s are dropping anyway...
You might want to consider an Embark tonneau cover. They make a hard top that rolls. It’s also lockable. You’ll spend around $2,000. You can order it from Ford.
Now the issue with your gas mileage is partly due to the front of your trailer. Your trailer is ribbed. That effects airflow and subsequently increases drag, which is lowering your gas mileage. I’m planning on purchasing an Imagine 17MKE, which has a smooth cap on the front. I wanted a smooth cap to help reduce drag and improve gas mileage.
I tow a 25" fiberglass Escape 5th wheel. It weighs about 4500 loaded. I have gotten quite a range of fuel mileage numbers, from 14 to over 17. (hand calculated). My Ranger is a 2021. The manual recommends 92 octane when towing. Handling is superb, tractor trailers barely affect it if at all. The trailer is narrow enough that I don't need mirrors. Power is amazing, can easily overtake slower traffic on grades and waste no time doing it. I love our combination.
