I pulled the spindles today to fix the turning radius issue with my dream beams on my 66 F100. Decided to change the shocks and springs also. I found the driver side kingpin is extremely tight. The only way to turn the spindle is with a breaker bar. Lower kingpin cap was tack welded on!?!? I got it off with a pipe wrench.
Passenger side spindle is nice and smooth.
Drum brakes are shot. Drum, hardware, wheel cylinder, all done in.
Now I'm asking myself what do I do about this frozen kingpin and should I just go ahead and upgrade to disc brakes since everything is torn apart?
It's common for ford kingpins to seeze, Replace the grease fitting , heat the spindle ends with a torch and pump some grease into it. You may have to heat it a few times, once it's free make sure it's tight, which it usually is, them just make sure you grease them from time to time.
I've done a boatload of them over the years, and never had one beat me.
Thanks, most kits are up to 64 and are notably cheaper (~$300). For whatever reason 66 is different and runs about $700 minimum unless I'm missing something...
