I've got a 1972 F100 with drum brakes all around. I'm wanting to switch to disc brakes up front, and I've heard I can just trade out the front axles, brakes and all, but I'm not sure which years will fit? Will 73-79 axles bolt up, or is there a difference? What about some of the vans? We have an older 76 ford van with disc brakes, and I was going to use them, but I think the steering is on the front instead of the rear, which might be a problem. If anyone's done this before, or has any know-how, please let me know. THanks
I also have a 72 F-100 w/ drums, and I know this subject has been worn out, but here goes. I have read the article "FRONT DRUM TO DISC BRAKE CONVERSION GUIDE FOR 65-72 FORD TRUCKS" in the tech section. My question is would it be any easier to just change the I-Beams and leave the spindles attached, or just do it the way specified in the tech article. I have a complete 73 ranger that I'm parting out and have access to everything I should need. What do you think? Is there another article that I have missed and need to read? Thanks for any advice on which way to tackle this task.
Yeah, I'm one of the lazy ones the moderator was talking about. I'm still new here, so I'm trying to figure my way around. In fact, literally only minutes after I posted that question, I found the tech article about the brake swap. My apologies for my ignorance, everyone.
I'm asking myself the same question that you are, 53flathead. I'm not sure if there is another tech article or anything, and I'm not sure either which way would be better. I'm thinking I'll probably go with what the article said. (Still looking for a parts truck by the way!) We were also considering using the later ('80 up) disc brakes, with the steering in front of the axle. We have a mid-'80's front end in our yard, just sitting there, we thought if we could find a longer steering column for that then maybe we'd use it. But I don't know. Does anyone else have any insight on any of this?
