C4 Transmission help
I have a 64 F100 Shortbed.
The engine is an early 70's Ford 302 and the Transmission that it has is a mid to late 70's C4 Pan fill trans from a ford truck.
This combo was put in by one of the last owners of the truck. I found that the secondary Servo is leaking oil and the reason it is leaking oil is because the bolts that hold the servo cap are stripped and have previously been rethreaded to the point that there isn't much space to rethread it again.
So I am looking for a new C4.
Question is this. i found a late 60's Trans fill C4 that was attached to a 1992 302. It was in a 65 mustang. Seems to be in good order.
Would it be ok to just plug this into my my Truck?
Thanks for your help in advance.
And, there is the valve body issue, whether it's a Select-Shift or Cruise-O-Matic. No real problem, but the quadrant is different, and the operation is also different.
Lastly, the C4 is one of the easiest auto trans to rebuild, which is what I would do before putting ANY transmission in.
Other than the above, there should be no real issue swapping.

how about this?
I found another C4 from a 1973 Mach 1. Again it’s a case fill where mine was a pan fill. They are closer in year though. It was also attached to a 302
Understand that it is NOT the year I am counseling, it's that you need to know what certain aspects are in the transmission.
I always assume that things have been changed/swapped/whatever in 50+ year old cars and trucks. So, I make sure of what things are.
I would NOT put a transmission in my truck, *****-nilly, without at least making sure it's a wide band, and that I knew which valve body is in it, but that may have to wait until driving.
There are no real advantages/disadvantages to Select-Shift over Cruise-O-Matic, but you absolutely need to know which it is when driving.
The reasons I advocate rebuild are:
Ford are "band shift" transmissions, GM are "clutch shift". Bands wear faster than clutches, and the drums can sustain heat damage. C4s are very susceptible to this.
C4s are not the strongest transmission, so I'd want to put my best foot forward, as it were. In other words, I'd not want to take it out AGAIN, just to do what I should have done in the first place - rebuild.
C4 rebuilds are CHEAP and EASY. Did my first one before I was old enough to drink. And it didn't CAUSE me to drink. The only manual I used was the Ford shop manual for my Falcon (C4s are not truck trans).
But, it's your money, your time, your truck.
