I'm trying to figure out how to mount this transmission filter:
I was looking at the inside frame rail from the gold square Sharpie markings:
The gold box represents the outline of the aluminum backing plate. I found these grade 5 bolts in my spare bolt bucket and thought "I'm in Business." I was going to run the bolts through the frame rail until I saw the indention that resembled the sidewall of a tire. So, are these out of the question? : If I can't secure it with bolts through the frame, where else should I mount it?
Thanks ahead of time.
Why not mount it more towards the middle of the vehicle inside the frame? You'd have to re route lines anyways. Might as well put it somewhere with plenty of room and no chance of getting smashed it anything.

"Toilet paper roll" never heard that term used for a filter before. Yes, I'm trying to mount the aluminum plate to the inside frame rail on the passenger side about half an inch forward of the yellow string hanging down.
I've got a Fastenal near me that opens on Monday. I think I want a self tapping screw/hex head screw. Those guys should be able to help. One on each side of plate should do it.
If you ever saw a replacement filter for that one you’d know why, it looks just like a roll of TP. I was going to suggest self tappers, it shouldn’t take much to hold that bracket. I’d add a third in a triangle.
I think the self tappers are the way to go also. The toilet paper roll filter was a 5R110 trans thing, the 4R100 didn't have any external filter from the factory.
I just saw a video on "Pete's Garage" on how to install Rivnuts and was blown away. I'm going to look into this. If I can get a thick enough one, then I may be able to, not only install the aluminum backing plate on the frame rail, but also the filter housing. That would give me five (5) supporting bolts through the frame. Never heard of these things.
Thanks for the advice. I've got some research to do.
Why would you want 5 bolts for one filter? I think three of the self tapping screws would be fine, it’s just a filter. I have a secondary fuel filter on my frame rail with one thru bolt holding it with no issues and I’m one of those “the more the better” types!
Good question. It makes me rethink this project. Since it would be more difficult to drill through the frame rail where the three (3) filter housing mounting holes are located, I think I need a couple of spacers the thickness of the nut, lock washer and flat washer for each of those bolts. The spacers would be placed between the aluminum plate and frame rail for the two (2) plate bolts to go through. This would ensure a level platform for the plate. That would, also, mean a longer Rivnut. Does this make any sense?
This little project is at the limit of my engineering skills.
Thanks for the question.
