Not too much going on here on the Duratec thread. Obviously the 6-cylinder has always been the black sheep of the F-Series family (at least since Ford discontinued the old 300-Inline) but I'm sure there's a few of us on here that quietly go about our business everyday working our trucks. So let's see who's got the highest mileage on their trucks. Without pics of the odometer it doesn't count.
Or for another twist: who has recorded the highest average mpg out of their little Duratec? Where were you, what were the circumstances?
I only have 70,5xx on my 2012 3.7 4x4 so obviously I don't have the highest odometer reading. As for mpg, I have seen it average as high as about 23+ once and that was running up through the mountains at 65-70 with the AC on. Then again I've also seen as low as single digits puttin' around town with the AC on! Honestly I don't pay that close attention to fuel economy all the time. I just fill it up when the gauge gets down to about 1/4 tank, or when I get paid; whichever comes first.
For your viewing pleasure I've attached the most recent picture of my Beast. This was taken in January after the body shop had repaired the front end. I had a fender-bender on an icy road in December of last year and damaged the grille and bumper. The estimator wrote it for a chrome grille by mistake. I elected to keep it rather than go back to the OEM black plastic. But it is an XL.
My little 3.7L is certainly not a high mileage motor. My '14 F150 only has 57k miles on it right now. Been daily driving it since I bought it new in April 2015 as a leftover. Its a regular cab short bed, 4x4, STX package. Only other option it had was the towing package which mandated 3.73 gears. Best MPG I've been able to squeak out of it is 22 over the course of a whole tank. This was right after I got it, purposely trying to see how good I could do with it. Since then, I've put bigger tires, 285/70R17s, a Bilstein leveling strut, and 1.5" taller blocks in the rear. Now it averages closer to 16 or 17.
Honestly I love the 3.7L. Does everything I need it to do for the truck it is in. I don't expect it to haul any big loads, but works good for hauling little trailers and misc. things in the bed. I was worried that it would feel pretty gutless compared to the 5.4 and 351w's that I'm used to but I was pleasantly surprised. The only gripe that I had was that the truck shifted horrifically with the factory tuning. Put a SCT X4 and a tune from 5 Star on it really woke the trans up and firmed up the shifts.
Ive got two 3.5 as of now. Nothing special, a 2017 with 84k and a 2016 with 113k. Bought used not long ago but have a very uneventful history report of just oil changes and brake/tire replacements. In my search over the past few months ive run across many fleet XLs both 3.7 and 3.5 ranging from 180k-250k that looked to be original engine and hardly any repairs. Looks like these are pretty solid which is what im after for work trucks.
My 2017 is 2wd regular cab long bed and over the 7k miles ive had it so far the trip says 24mpg and still rising. Ive travelled about 280 miles when the fuel gauge is at halfway and 11-12 gallons on fill-up. 2016 is 2wd extended cab short bed and have not driven it a full tank yet.
