I was talking with a local commercial fisherman I have known him for a long time anyhow he has a 03 6.0 F-450 he says he gets 24mpg which is a little hard to beleive. He said his competitor who I know had the same truck but it was geared lower and got significantly worse mileage. The trucks were both 03s both had the same deck set up the trucks are the same color the only way to tell the trucks apart is the decks slightly different.
Then we were talking about another fisherman he has a 05 Dodge Cummins 2500 ext cab P/U its only getting 11 mpg. The truck has a trip meter or what ever you call it and it gives the mpg. I know this fisherman too I haven't talked to him in a long time but I don't think he is too happy I'am pretty sure his last Dodge was the first year of the new body style from the brick body style and with the 12 valve with the inline pump.
So his new truck probably weighs 1000lbs less than mine maybe more and he is getting worse mileage than I'am.
Any mileage figures from the Tripmeter are going to be off. The only way to get accurate mpg figures is by hand calculating mileage and it will take a few times to get a true average. Unless you're comparing actual hard figures then it's just a matter of the tripmeter telling fishing stories.
Aside from that, each engine is unique and each driver is too. The most important factor in mileage has always been the weight of the drivers foot. Similar setups should produce similar results, if they don't then there could be engine/drivetrain issues to research.
Once you've checked the true mileage then you can decide where to go from there.
i dont belive there getting 24 mpg out of a 450, my 06 450 gets 14mpg empty and 12 towing 18k with the 4.30 rear end and its a crew cab 4x4 6speed the trip computer is never anywhere near what my actual fuel mileage is. when im really running it hard close to the revlimiter i have never seen the trip meter say im getting less than 12mpg.
the fleet of trucks we have there all 4x4 f550's autos ranging from plain flatbeds to full every whistle and bell style utilitybody and bucket trucks we average 12mpg across the entire fleet of 34 trucks. alot of theese trucks are running when there not moving to operate ptos for hydraulics, bucket truck, crane.......or sitting in the truck with the ac on.
my 97 f250 gets 16mpg empty and 12 towing 12k horse trailer. im also running enough mods on this truck to be close to 400rwhp
Mileage fish stories! I love it! My '97 got 14MPG before any mods and about the same so far (maybe a bit worse!) since the exhaust kit - I think my driving habits of late have something to do with that. Mmmmm turbo...
One's driving habits make a huge difference in any auto, but it seems that diesels are more sensitive to this behavior than gas.
I have a 1997 f250 crew cab, 4.10 rear, auto, manual hubs and i have been watching my mileage when ever i go somewhere on the highway and with me driving it seams to do better Than with my wife driving. I really belive that driving habits are a big part of mileage. the other thing that I haven't heard mentioned is how much fuel is being put in the tank. Diesel foams really bad whitch will cause the tank to seam full (you know the pump will shut off) when it might not be. the temp. and the speed that you fill your tanks changes the amount of foam that will be put in the tank. Its kinda like a soda pop you pour in to a glass, it looks full until the foam is gone. just somthing to think about. thanks for thoughts on mileage. This is the best place for stroker info. I have found.
I Have a 96 f250 cc psd and when i got it got about 16mpg. I Believe it has 355's in it and should be running 235's tires. I have 285's on it and get at a best 13.5 mpg. with a common low of 10mpg. Do you think I should re-gear it will I get the money back out of it if i Do? Any ideas
My brother in law has a Cummins, and is always trying to "one up" me. He's got a trip computer on his truck, and has looked at it while cruising down the freeway. From that, he concludes that he gets between 25-30mpg. I suppose going downhill, it might read any number you want, if the slope is steep enough.
hey scott welcome back . how is so cal treating you?

I am averaging a solid 18.5 mpg running w/ DK Grey, a new set of Michelin 235-85-16 XPS RIB's ($$$$$$$$$$, but smooth) and not too many mashes to the floor..... I've picked up almost 1 mpg since the 4" exhaust upgrade. And that's with hauling a full 300 gallon water tank 10 miles one way on a daily basis.
