Engine hesitation/power problem

1996 Ranger, 3.0L, 6cyl., auto trans. 175k miles.

In the last couple days, my Ranger has developed a missing/hesitation when accelerating or going uphill when the engine is cold. It has so far cleared up after the engine warms up, but seems to have a little less power than normal. The check engine light came on when this problem began a couple days ago. Up until now, this has been a rock solid vehicle, never given me a moment's worth of trouble. I've faithfully performed normal recommended maintenance on it. Would really like to get to 200k or better before I have something major that needs repair. Any ideas? I can't afford to let a dealer bleed me dry on diagnostics and shot-in-the-dark replacement of parts.

Also, a separate problem: when it shifts up from first into second, there is a small metallic ringing noise. It only happens when upshifting, and only between 1st/2nd.

For the first problem you need to have the codes pulled, some parts stores do it for free.

Which parts chains normally do it for free, or is it a hit/miss situation?

I have heard autozone does, just call around to your local stores.
