Rim Size 20's???

I'm looking at getting new wheels for my 2012 F250 with stock 17's. I was wondering what everyone thought about going up to 18's or 20's? I like the look of 20's but was a little concerned about if this would change the ride of the truck in any negative ways?? Anyone running 20's and like them compared to 18's?? I'm going to go with OEM rims, just haven't decided on size yet, thanks in advance!!

I have the OEM 20s on my truck. The bigger the rim, the smaller the sidewall gets. The smaller the sidewall height, the harder the ride. Plus the more expensive the wheels and the tires get. What's your main reason for wanting to do this?

When I buy summer wheels/tires, I want to go to 18s as they are cheaper and I can get the same size tire (height wise) for less money. I keep my LT275/65R20s at 60 psi and the low tire pressure light comes on. Doesn't bother me though. But she rides like a one ton truck does...which is way better than my F250 with the transplanted kingpin Dana 60 with leaf sprung front end with 16s did. I believe ride quality is subjective as we all have different opinions on ride.

I had a 2011 ecsb lariat with 18's and currently have a 2013 ccsb lariat with 20's. Both trucks had/have 3.73 and rode/accelerated/braked/handled the same IMO even though the 13 has bigger brakes.

The 18's were 32.7" overall dia; the 20's are 34.4" overall dia.

They will absolutely ride different.

I have a 2012 F350. I currently have my set of OEM 20" wheels with 37x13.50x20 Toyos on them. I also have a set of 17" Method NVs with 37x13.50x17 Toyos on them. The ride difference between the two is very obvious when I switch them out. A larger sidewall makes a big difference.

I had 17s on my pickup and then went to 20s. Didn't really notice a ride difference.

I was looking at going the other way, I have 20's and wanted to go with 18's to lower the truck for towing. Hadn't thought about 17's, that might change the gearing too much.

If you have the OEM 20 inch size of 275/65, that's about just over 34". Are you looking to go the same size in 18 or go a little smaller? Because what size you can find in 18s, you can find in 17s, the same diameter I mean. And the smaller the size, from 18 to 17, the tires and wheels are cheaper. What are you looking to do?

I was looking to lower the truck and gain bed rail clearance. The truck came with 17, 18, or 20's as OEM and dropping to 18's should give me a little more clearance and drop the nose which is slightly high. I believe it has 3:73 gears and don't want to lose much mileage, 17 might be too big a drop. I run an SCT so I can adjust the speedo as needed. Smaller size, missed that, maybe 27565x18

One cheap way to drop the @$$ end a little is to get rid of the 350 OEM lift blocks and get the shorter 250 lift blocks. But anyways, I'll assume here for this discussion you want to drop down to a 32 inch diameter tire. Using the Cooper XLT AT3s, I chose a size in the 18 inch size, LT265/70R18 and a 17 inch, LT285/70R17.

Using this site, https://tiresize.com/calculator/, you can compare sizes. There isn't much of a difference between the two except the 17 and 18 inch sizes. Check it out:

You can see they are about the same diameter, but the 17 inch has more sidewall and is wider. You can go with the 17 or the 18 in a smaller size. It all depends on what you want to do and how much money you want to spend.

Thanks that will help. Any idea how much the smaller diameter will make on gearing & mileage? Smaller diameter should mean lower gearing if my thinking's correct and a small lose of mileage.

Okay, seeing how the dually F350s of our generation came with LT245/75R17E tires, I'll use them as a go to tire for you because most guys use their duallys to haul some weight. I'm no expert here so I'll help point you in the right direction. On that same site I linked to, there is a gear ratio calculator to help you get an idea of what would happen with a new size of tire with the gear ratio you have. It's under the tire size tools tab.

https://tiresize.com/gear-ratio-calculator/

So I took my size tire, LT275/65R20s which I'll assume are yours, and compared it the size of the dually F350 tires, LT245/75R17s. It's too much of a size drop and would increase your RPMs on the highway. It looks like you would have to go with 3.31s.

Here's that 18 inch size that I used against the stock tires.

Looks like even a 2 inch reduction in tire size will really affect the final drive ratio and highway cruising RPMs I would think. I'd look into dropping the rear by using a smaller lift block in back as your cheapest and simpler way to achieve what you want.

I just bought a '14 F-350 FX4 and was looking at the Method wheels. Was the ride quality better or worse with the Methods?

In my opinion the ride quality is better. Not as harsh with the 37" tires on 17" wheels as compared to 37" tires on 20" wheels.
