From the times spent on this site I hope someone can help me. I have a '90 F250 4x4 w/ a 351 auto in it. My 4 ways lights won't turn on when I pull the switch. But when I hit my breaks with the switch on, they are on constantly. The turn signals wirt just fine, and I replaced the Fuse, but no dice. Anyone have any ideas. Thanx
4 ways have a seperate flasher unit from the turn signal. It is hidden up under the dash on the driver's side. Looks like a small can with a plug and two wires going to it. May be plastic or metal. It is most likely bad. You can swap it with the turn signal unit to test it.
After looking everywhere under the dash, and behind the glove box, I still can't find it. Got the Haynes Manual, it says behing the trun signal fuse/relay in the fuse box, or behing the instrument panel. After taking apart my dash, checking behind the fuse box, and even checking behind the heater control cluster, I am still lost. Does the relay look like the trun signal one? Or is it a different size? Teh only can-like object I can find is under the glove box, but it is the sixe of a 6 0z. can, and has one wire going to it.
If it is original it will look the same. If it is aftermarket, it will be taller. They are all about 1" in diameter and from 1" to 2" tall. It could be any color, plastic or metal. You may be looking for the wires alone if it is missing. It should be two wires with an "L" shaped plug. Usually to the left of the steering column. Did you check the owners manual?
I found it. It is to the right of the glove box, attached mto the frame by a nipple on top. I did not remove it, but I think you either twist it off, pull, or raise it in the slot. It was grren in color, same size and shape as the turn signal flasser. There is another thread on this subject under 87-96 p/u and vans. Thank you for your help, dbc.
If they quit when the other lights are on, look for bad grounds. When the running lights are off, the parking light filament acts as the return current path for the brake/turn/flasher filament if the ground is weak. When the parking lights are on, no return path.
the grounds look good so far as i can tell. They aren't rusted or corroded. the prev. owner wired a trailer hookup from the taillights, w/ a toogle in the cab. he also put a toggle on the hadle lights. I'm guseeing he did something. The parking lights do get dimmer when I turn the flashers on. Shoudl I bother with replacing the whole housing for each light?
Got em fixed. I took out all wires not from the factory. The remote starter doesn't work now, but the flashers are more important. Now I just have to rewire everything back up. Thanx for the help
