Hi you guys and gals so i have an 02 7.3 280k on the miles, when u first start the truck up,takes a while to start, the truck runs great except excessive and thick white smoke. After a few mins the truck settles down no smoke but idles really rough and stumbles and has no power, will not move in its tracks. Ive changed the IPR checked fuel filter its brand new. Unplugged the icp and tried it with it unplugged no change. Im stumped what's my next move?
Also dont know if it has anything to do with it the truck was traded in but had sat for a while at least 2 to 3 years.
Went thru this with a buddy of mine who bought a low mileage (50,000 miles) 7.3 that sat for awhile ... It ended up turning into a wild goose chase but we ultimately resolved the issue. To answer your question on the next move: install a new glow plug relay and report back. Also, where are you located? Just wondering for temperature reference.

Next move would be:
1. check for codes with a Powerstroke capable scanner (the ones at the parts stores are not Powerstroke capable but the workers don't know that and will tell you there are no codes because their cheesy scanner can't see them)
2. check fuel pressure
Good to know. With reference to my buddies truck we were in Elizabeth City, NC. Start with the glow plug relay to see if it makes a difference.
You mentioned after it takes a while to start, it runs great but then idles rough with no power. Does it feel like only half the engine is running? Meaning that you have a bad/loose UVCH (Under Valve Cover Harness).
No i do not have a laptop what else would be a good option?
sorry for the newbie questions ive owned alot of older model truck a bunch of idis and 460 trucks and besides my duramax this is the newest truck i own and its a whole different animal
Next Question my duramax is an 02 as well and im a running a edge cts with attitude would that monitor be able to pull those codes ik ot can on the duramax
Our trucks don't have sensors for fuel pressure, or EGTs. Those require add on gauges. The PCM reads all other info you will need to monitor. ForScan will show all that.
...02 7.3 280k...

...the truck...had sat for...2 to 3 years...
1) plug the block heater in for an hour or more...see how it starts and runs
This could be the GPR or glow plugs.
2) do check the UVCH harnesses
While under the valve covers, look for the 50 cent mod.. I hope you need it.
Ok ot does it no matter how long its been running had it running for over an hour i shut it off and cut it back on still does it replaced the gpr and stilk does it.itll run great for about 2 mins and when you rev it up in those 2 mins it blows a thick white smoke. After the 2 mins it idles down and shakes real bad the idle is about 600 rpm whick is normal nut has a vilot miss shake to it

First off... welcome to FTE!
Once the engine starts up and is running rough, does it eventually "kick in" as if someone flips a switch, and then run normally, or is it always running in the rough state?
Thank you and yes as if someone flipped the switch about 2 mins after its running
update i did find a scanner to scan it and it shows up 3 three codes for cylinder number 4
OK. If it's like someone flips a switch, it is likely that one of the poppet's is sticking in an injector until the oil temp gets high enough for it to release. There are injector shim kits available for about $50 to address this particular issue. A handful of guys on here have done this shim job with great results. I have a kit waiting to be installed in my '02 F250 for the exact same symptom.
But it does it no matter how hot the oil is
i poured some hot shots stiction eliminator and fuel injector cleaner in it and idleed it up to 2500 rpm and let it set for 2 hours and it disnt make a difference
