My "new" 4x4

Hey guys, first time Ford owner here. Since I've never messed with Ford trucks before, I've been looking for information about them and every google search winds up here. The old man I bought her from said that he was rebuilding it for his son, but the son decided he liked drugs better than 4x4 trucks. I was told the engine is a 300ci inline six. Transmission is 4 speed, granny first. The hubs lock up and I don't get any funny noises from the transfer case. I have to say that I'm impressed with that straight six, it pulls as hard as (dare I say harder than?) any 305 or 318 v8 that I've previously owned. I've got a squeaky wheel bearing to deal with, and she came with some pretty old and crackly tires which got replaced today. There's some rust eating through above the drivers side rear wheel, and the drivers side tail light needs new plastic. All of that is pretty easy to fix, but I'm not sure what exactly to look for on these old ford engines. I figure I'll post some pictures, and hopefully someone with some insight will let me know if I screwed myself jumping into this truck.

Thanks in advance for any advice, random bits of information, or anecdotes!

-Griz

Hiya Griz,

Welcome to the forum. Lots of helpful, intelligent people here. I'm here, too.

The straight six has an excellent reputation. Sounds like you've picked up a nice rig.

Much appreciated! Yeah there's a lot of information here to absorb. I like what I'm reading about the straight six. "Dependable" is what I need most in a truck, and everything I've read about the 300 starts and ends with that word. Doesn't hurt that I can throw it in granny and rip out an oak stump, too.

You happened to get a earlier model of that engine before they put the computer junk on it. Very good engine, but 1984-up was saddled with a computerized carb and distributor, complicating and sometimes handicapping a otherwise good engine underneath. You dodged a bullet there.

Oh that's very nice. I can work on old stuff, but once we start involving computers, I'm lost.

Holy Smokes! There's a lot of information on that sticker. So the blue was painted on after, eh? I wonder why he used even worse paint than 80's factory paint. Glad to know the exact transmission and rear end. I think just a few bits of maintenance to bring her up, a little body work, and a coat of paint will turn her into a real nice work truck!

SLOW THE ROLL!
As good as Bill is with the information some things don't add up here.
As you pointed out the blue paint over the white? I cant see that happening but guess it could?
What color is the under side of the hood, inside of fenders, behind the seat, peel back the rug and under it?
White or blue?

That is also not a 9" rear axle looks to be a 8.8? Now I don't know for sure but I thought the 4x4 trucks got the 9" so the sticker would then be right and someone put the 8.8 under it.
I would then check the gear ratios in the front & rear axles that they match.
Would not be good to put it in 4x4 and have a 3.08 in the front and 3.55 or 3.73 in the rear as bad things will happen.

I would also look closer at the transmission. Cant you post a picture of the shift lever / stick? Look like this?

If it is a NP435 it should have the "NP" and other numbers on the right side above the PTO cover.

It is a nice looking truck

Thanks for the things to look into, Dave! I trimmed your pics to save space on the page

It's all white. I went out to get the pics you asked for and took this, where you can see it looks like the blue was put on with a freakin brush:

Is there a picture I can get that shows the rear better?
as far as the shifter, I think they look the same, here's mine:

Is the "NP" inside the little star shaped emblem?

Thanks a whole bunch, Dave!!! I really appreciate the knowledge and y'all taking your time to help a Ford newbie like me out. If there's a better pic I can take of the rear end to get a confirmation on what exactly that is, I'll go out there and crawl under again and get more.

Yikes! Double Post! Sorry!

So I did some more research, and I'm seeing that other people are saying axle code 19 is for the 8.8" 3.55 rear end. that would make the most sense from everything I'm looking at.
