Damn windshield cracked by itself when I was washing my 94 F150. It wasn't a hot day nor was anything really warm. It seemed like it cracked for no reason whatsoever. I was just rinsing it off and it just appeared. There's no sign of anything hitting it. I was planning on selling it in the near future. 'That's all I need is another expense and a windshield won't be cheap in relation to what I'll get out of this truck. I'm really bummed.
If it was an aftermarket windshield then I am not surprised. When the cheap ones are made they are stressed right from the factory and can crack for no reason. If it's OEM on your Excursion you probably hit a tree and just didn't notice.
Thankfully it's not the Excursion. It's the old F150 that I only use around the field nowadays.. It's been sitting for the last month. I'm sure the glass is aftermarket but it's at least 10-15 years old. I only have basic insurance for it so I doubt the glass would be covered.
If I find one a pick and pull then I might replace it myself. I think they charge $50 for a used one. I'll then get the goop to seal it and call it good.
In my opinion removing one from a pick and pull will be a waste of time since it will likely break while attempting to remove. It is urethaned in place, unlike older cars where it was just a gasket. Either have it replaced with the best deal you can find or just leave it with the crack. It shouldn't leak since the windshield is laminated and multi layered. If it is small enough you can try the a repair kit from the parts store.
The “local” u pull place won’t allow you to remove it yourself. They call in a glass company to remove it for you. I’m sure there is an additional charge for that service.
There are three cracks just above the rear view mirror. They haven't moved into the drivers view yet. If the cracks don't grow, I 'll leave it as it is. I know there are guys that can come out and drill the cracks to keep them from growing. That's my biggest worry.
