Clunking Noise

Noise coming from around the engine area, can be described as a "clunking" or "groaning" sound. Best heard when holding brakes on, in gear (both forward and reverse) with throttle applied. Engine does have movement - but not like the usual broken motor mount amount. Any guesses???????? 1992 F150 302 automatic 2WD

Are you saying that this noise is continuous while applying the brakes and power in forward and reverse. Or doe's the noise happen when you apply the brakes and power while shifting from forward to reverse?

Put brakes on and hold em, put into drive and gently apply throttle till noise is heard and same in reverse. The noise almost sounds like creaking metal rubbing together or put under extreme stress while twisting. It's a Georgia truck with no rot or rust and no accidents, it's also too cold outside at the moment to look under the truck for frame cracks or other causes.

My first thought is a bad torque converter. Doe's your transmission feel normal under regular driving conditions? There is an inspection plate located towards the rear bottom of the oil pan and another member said that if it is a ford part it should be bare with no paint. If the torque converter has the color of the bluish tint like the steel barrel of a gun then your torque converter is overheating and slipping and needs to be replaced. I am not a transmission guy but that could also be an issue.

The truck isn't currently on the road and just has been driven around the shop yard. So can't attest to any tranny issues. Like I said, that noise sounds like a metal groaning while under stress while being twisted. Like Superman grabbing an I beam and bending it - but in slow motion.
