Fuel selector or not?

Thanks for looking. I brought home a 87 f250 diesel that was sitting for 3 years. It took a while to get the fuel lines and returns cleaned up and also to kill the mildew in/on it. I got it to run and got all the lights working and it's driveable now. Both tanks showed full when I picked it up, and I saw the fuel level going down on the gauge over time. But all of a sudden, the fuel gauges read pegged on full for one tank and dead empty on the other. I may have driven the truck 80 miles or so over the last few months, all on the front tank which reads "full" now. I changed to the "empty' tank and have made one trip to town and back on it (20 miles or so round trip). Does this symptom mean I need to replace the fuel selector switch, or is it more likely indicating a short or open condition somewhere in the wiring? Is it likely that the electric selector valve hasn't changed over and I'm still using fuel from the front tank?

If one sender failed, it would affect the other one in the opposite way? Or are you saying that I have two failures, one shorted and one open?

When I was working on a turn signal issue. When my truck was running I unplugged the fuel selector switch in the lower left dash panel and my fuel gauge went to full immediately.
I suspect you lost a ground to the front tank. I would just run a new ground wire for the front and see if that helps then fix the rear tank.
