86 4.9L Distributor Question, Please
If you look at this YouTube video
Can anyone confirm this, or not? I can't find anything in my Hanes manual and I would like a second reference to confirm please.
Also, I am trying to determine if I have the Duraspark 2 or 3 ICM. I have attached a photo of my ICM module and the wiring diagram found in the Hanes guide for Duraspark 2. What I have learned is the Duraspark 3 has 5 wires and the Duraspark 2 has 6, mine has 6 but the color of the wires varies slightly. Can anyone comment on this?
Thanks
Chris
In how the dist. gets placed is not really a big deal and even more so with a computer controlled dist. as you really don't need to turn the dist. to set timing.
So as long as you can turn the dist. a little to set the timing drop it in.
As for where #1 points it also can point anywhere on the cap as long as the firing order is followed.
It is nice when you have to do trouble shooting with the dist. that it kind of follows the book as not to confuse anyone.
As for what model you have I cant help with that.
Why was the dist. pulled, bad pick up coil or ?
Most of the time it is that gray box, TFI unit, with the wires plugged into it.

The mistake most people make is not really having the engine at TDC #1. The only way to know is pull the valve cover and make sure the valves are shut on #1 when the timing mark comes up, or take the sparkplug out and hold your finger over the hole while someone turns the engine by hand, and when air tries to push your finger off the hole, keep going and bring the timing mark up. The timing mark comes up twice during normal operation, one them is wrong, one of them is correct, and those two methods are the only way to figure it out.
Once you get the real TDC #1, then you need to pick where you want #1 cylinder to be on the distributor cap. It can be anywhere on the cap. But it's a good idea to look in the book and sort of follow and copy how the factory had it, it makes your sparkplug wires fit better. And you also need to stab the distributor in so the module on the side with the wires is not in the way of hitting anything. I found a diagram on the internet which shows a spot for #1, not sure if that would work for you or not.

Take a magic marker and mark the base of the distributor where #1 wire would be on the cap. Then stab the distributor in place so the rotor is pointing to this mark. You may have to mess with it to get it to drop in, you have to get the oil pump drive to engage also.
Then just follow the diagram above to hook the rest of the wires up.
