E4OD Shifting Characteristics, Now a code!

Well as you can tell from the frequency of my posts, I don't drive the truck often.
But driving around occasionally shes been running perfect.. except the other day,, with no symptoms it started the hard shift thing again. So now when I drive it I turn the OD off to keep the limp mode away.
Here's my dilemma and I need some real world feedback. I am assuming the TC is likely bad or going bad. I talked to a few trans shops who say not to replace just the TC, that a total rebuild is in order ($$$ more than I paid for the truck).
How risky is it to replace just the TC? Other than the TC code and the hard shift mode, it seems perfect.
Oh....it will do the harsh shift in reverse thing once in a while. Its only done that twice and goes away on the next start up.
