Tilt column

Any advice on reassembling the tilt mechanism spring? Its the big spring that goes between the two halves of the mechanism.

I wrestled with it for over an hour before giving up.

Update: I managed to get it back together between the vise and a c clamp. Tough spring! Still took me an hour to get it set right.

I am finding that to be the easy part. I installed a lower roller bearing and now the steering shaft is too short. Seems to be getting hung up on a small collar on the base of the shaft. Is that normal???

Doesn’t sound right, but its been a while since I assembled my 68 column. The only thing I can recall at the moment is that the shift arm has to be indexed to seat in the steering shaft and allow the shaft to slide into place.
