So I bought my 86 6.9 f250 to tow a 7x16 enclosed cargo trailer to move to my new house. I did a lot of work to it before the move with the help of my friend Dennis (an experienced idi guy)...new showerhead (rear tank needs swapped still), inline filter, fuel selector valve, new fuel supply and return lines, new glow plug controller, new glow plugs, new radiator, new coolant, oil change, new steering gear box and rag joint, new PS pressure hose, transmission cooler lines, lubed and set the VRV...I'm sure there's a few other things I'm missing.
Anyway, it's been getting the job done but barely. My trailer is about 3k lbs empty and my heaviest load couldn't have been more than 8-9k lbs total. It bogs down on any hill. With the pedal floored I'm hitting 35mph Max. On the last load it just stopped pulling up the steepest hill on the route...I had to back up and get a better run at it and it barely made it.
Any ideas on what it could be/what to test/where to start looking?
Do you loose RPM's or do you keep high rpm's and just loose speed?
how many miles are on it ?
Do you know if the injector pump or injectors have ever been changed,
I'm sure smarter people will chime in but first guess I would say your sucking air or have fuel blockage under pressure,
There was a youtube where an IDI had a blockage on his shower head and it only showed up under load, he used a gauge to watch the pressure, Could you have debris in the tank or bits of the old shower head causing a blockage issue to the new shower head ???
I think I might hook up a Gerry can of fuel to the front bumper to help you trouble shoot if it's before or after the injection pump,
It's NA with 188k miles. Starts and idles fine when hot or cold...still have some issues with warm starts but I rigged a manual gp switch to assist.
It loses rpms for sure. I don't know about the IP or injectors. I really don't think it's air intrusion as all the fuel lines are new with new clamps except the hard lines. Maybe I should change the fuel filter though. The tank was pretty clean when I swapped the showerhead but I didn't drain it completely. I did pull a screw and an old bathroom sink aerator out of the tank though.
Good idea on bypassing the tank...I'll try that on the next load...I've got several cars I'm going to be loading in the trailer next...one at a time.
Turned out to be air intrusion from the orings on the FSV...either that or cause the plastic fuel line to the fuel fitting joint was spinning so I covered it with rtv, or because the nipples on the FSV to the rear tank were open to atmosphere which I plugged for now. Either way, it'll pull itself up a hill now without dying...next is to test it with my trailer.
Turns out my last post was the wrong diagnosis. It did fine around town but when I went to take the truck on an 3 hour trip and hit sustained speeds of 70 plus MPH it started experiencing the same issues. I replaced the sending unit and now my gas gauge is accurate. Then I replaced the 12v inline pump and the problem was solved. I didn't realize the pump had an inline filter on it till I bought the new one. I also pulled, drained, and cleaned the tank really well. I just installed a Racor R90 as well. She's running like a champ now!
