There was a comment in the older post I linked to where a guy was using the 8 pin switch on the 7 pin plug, and he did not have the exact same operation of his marker lights. That stands to reason, the correct switch has one power feed for both the headlights and the marker lights. The later style switch has a separate pin that has a separate fused wire that feeds the marker lights. That is why it has one extra pin.
I am not sure on the number thing, but obviously it's not the direct replacement for the 7 pin.
