Since I'm expecting a summer mostly spent at home this year I figured I'd get a project done and rebuild the engine on my 84 6.9. However, I can't seem to find rebuild kits anywhere other than Ebay and they're all for brands I have never heard of. Where would be a good place to get a rebuild kit?
Haven't needed a kit in years, but the parts dept. at any truck shop I worked in could get complete engine rebuild kits from any quality parts house like Napa, etc. Perfect Circle, TRW, Sealed Power, Federal Mogul (one of the best) and quite a few others that don't come to mind right now. Don't know if our IDI's are too old for Ford or International truck dealers to stock complete kits, you might check. I've bought Ebay items, but when it comes to any mechanical parts, I'd be worried about counterfeit crap. According to the news, that seems to be common nowadays.

It's really getting bad these days. I changed some knock sensors for a customer that he ordered off Amazon, look and packaged the same as oem but they weren't oem and don't even work. What a joke
As for the rebuilt just go with a known brand from a know vendor.
I'd recommend you also pick up a set of total seal piston rings from r&d @ www.idiperformance.com
Also plenty of goodies to look at there if you're chasing power or just need a fresh fuel system
Reliance Power Parts # RP946159 is the most complete kit available for these, no company is fully supporting these engines. So all kits will be combinations of parts from various manufacturers.

A couple months ago it was on the news that the Feds had found 1000's of counterfeit items in shipping containers. Can't remember what it was, but it was a product where it's important we get and use the genuine article, not like fake high dollar women's purses or whatever. And years and years ago the shop I worked in got the monthly Fleet Magazine which is a trucking industry mag and they warned about counterfeit Rockwell SSHD and SQHD ring and pinion sets. Those are the biggies that go in Peterbilt and Kenworth tandem differentials. I thought, wow, if they counterfeit heavy duty stuff like that, who knows what else? There's even a website section on fake Oakley sunglasses. Like you said, known vendor is the key.
Mentioning counterfeit parts, here is a You Tube about Counterfeit Motorcraft parts.
Also just Google Motorcraft counterfeit parts and see what comes up.
