Upon taking heater out to install new o-ring, I broke the element off of the plate and also one of the cylindrical plates off of the element. Can I put back together as is or should I just buy a new one?
Thanks. Basically it prob won’t work as is or if I think I need it then don’t risk the chance that it won’t work. I’ll probably end up replacing it. I just like to have peace of mind that everything is as it should be. Man. My stupid little mistakes sure are costing me a good bit of time and money. Guess that’s the learning curve though
So in the event of using a piece without the hole, do I remove the screen and gasket? The old plate was tight to that screen so if I use the screen and a plate without it then I don’t see how it would allow sufficient fuel to pass. I would also be inclined to keep it because it was obviously doing something judging by the buildup of gunk it had on it
shouldn't have to remove the screen there should be ample clearance between it and the heater plate.
it's just return fuel... IF you Really feel the need then you could just drill a 1/4" hole in the new heater plate... but I seriously wouldn't worry about it.
I know that my existing plate is fairly close to the screen. I think I’ll just order a cheap one off eBay and modify as needed. I’m know that the element curved around that hole but I don’t really see the big deal if it doesn’t
well, you do need to make sure that the element wire is not being shorted out by that screen for sure.... removing the screen is no big deal either as the newer heads don't have that screen anymore.
what year is that Filter head on.... I was just looking for TSB to see if I could find anything specific but I don't see any bulletins on it from Ford.
This is how you properly repair the fuel filters anti gel, heating element.....
I live up in Maine and I haven't required the prone to leak device since.
Should you encounter fuel gelling in your filter, a far better method would be to buy a universal wrap style fuel heater like one of these:
I was going to get one of those, should I ever need it but many years now without and no issues. If I lived up in Canada or Alaska, yeah I'd probably add one, even if just for peace of mind.I wouldn't have anything to do with trying to replace or repair that oem setup though. That deserves a pipe plug with a good dose of jb weld.
the older style sits higher in the Head than the newer style...
so you should have no problems with it....and no need to drill holes ... just be sure to make sure the element wire don't short to that screen part is all....
