Also, unrelated question but I’m currently replacing return line on the injectors, should I take them out and take them to get popped? Someone else I was talking to recommended it but the shop that can do it is over 30 min away and his hours overlap my work hours so I wouldn’t be able to get out there for a couple weeks. I’m all about preventative maintenance and can wait that long if need be but if it’s completely unnecessary I don’t want to do it.
it’s a 94, sorry I have to update my sig. it’s also a van but I doubt that makes any difference
well vans are a bit of a different animal than the trucks.... but the only thing I found was a TSB about fuel Freezing in the DDM ... and that don't apply here.
Ok and as far as just pulling the injectors for the sake of a POP test I suggest you don't do that unless you are actually having problems with the injectors.
Cool, that will save me both time and money. I only have 130k well maintained miles on it anyways. Should I at least remove the injectors and clean them? Or maybe just keep running injector cleaner thru the fuel?
I wouldn't remove them ... if you remove them you should replace the copper seal washer or at least Anneal them before re-use.... we have some folks here that says copper is always soft, but sadly they don't understand metallurgy and the properties of copper being Work hardened..... anyway Ford says they are a 1 time use item... International I think knows why
Now IF you are going to disturb the injectors by removing them ....then you should also take the Injection Pump to the shop at the same time so all the items can be Bench tested and cleaned.
I'm a firm believer in Don't Fix things that ain't Broke.
next time you change the fuel filter just fill it with Diesel Kleen run the engine for at least 30 seconds and then let it sit over night ... next day give it a good drive and the system will be very Clean
Alright I probably won’t take them out then. I have some Lucas fuel injector cleaner, will that work as well as diesel kleen? Also I’m guessing the system will self prime when trying to start after I hook everything back up and install new filter? I may not be able to fill the filter up all the way either because of the angle I have to install it in this dang van. Sorry for all the probably simple questions, still learning
Someone else probably knows for sure, but I would stick with diesel kleen or cheap ATF instead of fuel injector cleaner that probably lacks lubrication. Fill the new filter with the diesel kleen or ATF , run it 30 seconds or so let it get into the pump and injectors, let it sit overnight like lonewolf said. Then drive it like you stole it. It can be somewhat hard to get running with the air that gets in it from a less than full filter/filter change, but thats what the schrader valve is for.
yes Vans are a bit more of a PIA to work on than the trucks ... but getting to the back of the engine is easier than the truck...
I've never use Lucas injector cleaner in a filter like I explained..... I've only used ATF or Diesel Kleen and I have just got to the point that I think Diesel Kleen works just as good as ATF and maybe better, but those 2 products is all I have experience with as far as filling a Filter.
your should be able to fill the filter before screwing it on.
AND IF I was you I would not remove the filter until After doing the Fuel Return cups and lines and starting the engine and running it a bit for leak checks first....
you will have air in the injector lines when you do the Return line Kit and it might be a little hard to start but is should Bleed out pretty quick.
IF you cannot fill the Filter when you change it you will need to bleed the filter with the Schrader valve to get air out of the system or you will have hard starting issues.
you could always put the filter in a position that is upright near the Filter head then fill it with a funnel and small hose then it will be full when you screw it on.
Good idea . I can’t believe I didn’t think about filling it after I get it in place. Unfortunately I already have everything taken apart. Filter is off due to replacing o ring for heater and the return lines are off and getting replaced right now

Yeah I understand that.... and I know you will have air in the supply lines and the injector lines for sure.... this is why I suggested Next time you replace the filter do the Diesel Kleen thing.
