As a van/C-Class RV owner I have very few 'plusses' when it comes to a 6.0 other than getting to the back of the engine when necessary. But, here is one. I already have a 3rd battery sitting in the frame to handle small electrical loads throughout the 'house' part of the RV. All 'big' power loads are propane powered. So it seems to me it would make sense to plumb that battery into my starter batteries (intermittently) and use it solely for those few seconds of starting. I saw this item on Amazon that comes complete with an electromagnetic on/off mechanism for one of the battery leads, and includes a rocker switch for the dash. Therefore the 'marriage' of the batteries is just a push button operation, and seconds later they can return to 'normal' for charging and other usage. Make sense?
i solved that on my camper with an automatic relay.
I have the original 2 starter batteries (100AH each) and 2 consumption batteries (180AH each).
As soon as power is supplied, whether from the alternator, campground power or the solar system, the relay automatically switches both battery pairs together.
When we camp and the relay detects that there is power being drawn from the consuming batteries, it disconnects the battery pairs so an engine start is always possible.
I would recommend you to buy a high quality product from a specialist shop
First thing to check is to make sure your RV doesn't already HAVE a momentary Tie switch. Ours does, and it doesn't care which way the current flows: House batts to start coach engine or Starting batts to fire off Genset... In general the way the manual describes it, is you're ready to leave camp and your starting batts are dead. Since I haven't gotten around to installing the solar for the House batts, most cases they are the ones that are low when we're leaving a Dry or non-hook-up campsite. On our dash the switch is labeled: Aux Start MOM - it's a spring back rocker switch, you hold it down while turning the key (for engine), or holding down both MOM and the Gen Start switch for generator starting...
Ok, thanks for the pointers gentlemen. I like the idea of some kind of automatic relay. Currently, the batteries have no mechanism to tie them together, as Diesel Dan has. I'd be in a little over my head trying to jury rig something, and rather than risk fireworks, there are a couple of auto-electric businesses not far from me. Thanks again!
I use this in my boat. Charges the trolling battery while the engine is running but disconnects when the engine is off. They make models with larger capacity. https://www.yandina.com/TrollBattery.htm
