I just finished struggling to get the spare tire mounted under my 1978 F250. I'm getting too old for that battle! Has anyone modified the hardware to make the job easier?

Ford also had a bed mounted spare option, it's relatively simple to add. You could get a cover for the spare to keep the sun away. I've seen them mounted directly behind the cab on the back board, on the side directly behind the cab and on the side by the tailgate.
Here's the page from the Ford parts catalog:
I've always considered adapting one of those winch down under the bed carriers like you see on Chevy's and other trucks. Where there's a cable that lower and raises the spare in the original location. Can't be that hard
I bought an aftermarket crank-down type about 30 years ago and never installed it. Of course...
And also typical of me, now that I'm going to install a 45gal gas tank, the spare is no longer going to fit anyway. Probably have to buy another truck just to fit the kit then!
I don't want to lose the bed either, but I've always thought the bed-mounted spare was very industrial/commercial-cool and loved the look of highboys and lowboys alike, with a spare sticking up out of the front side of the bed.
If my buddy still makes bumpers by the time I get around to it, I'll probably do a rear mounted swing-away on a bumper.

I forgot about those! I like that idea. My gas tank is above the spare tire, so I wouldn't be able to lift at the center. But I bet I could figure something out to lift at the j-hook end.
Some pics of the slide out carrier in the wild. As far as I know, everything you see is original, including the 16.5" split rim and what may be an original tire.
