Strange object behind balancer 5.0 efi

Hi folks,
im about to remove the harmonic balancer on my 96 f150 5.0 and I’ve run into a four-pointedxtarlike object about 5 inches or so in diameter that turns with the balancer. I have no idea what is, nor does any repair manual I’ve looked at. I’ve never seen anything like it in 60 years of wrenching. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks

Crank position sensor? Is your truck OBD2? A pic would really help.

That is a '96 which should be OBD2 and would have a crank sensor, there should be a sensor mounted on the timing cover somewhere close by, the part on the balancer is a tone ring that triggers the sensor and sends a pulse to the computer. This sensor isn't used for ignition I believe it is a misfire sensor.

Thanks for the reply. I am familiar with triggers, but they usually have been magnets or similar fixtures on the balancer. This is a starfish shaped object that has no apparent electrical contact and is very thin. I did take a photo and I’ll try to post it later today. I have reassembled the engine and it’s too hard to see it in place.

A photo and description of the misfire sensor and tone ring from another forum:

...

Misfire Sensor in a 96, aka Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS), next to the pointer.
by unkown FSB member.
...
Excerpts:
"The misfire sensor is an electromagnetic inductance coil similar in operation to a camshaft or crankshaft position sensor. A four-point stator, or pulse ring, located behind the crankshaft damper generates an electrical impulse in the sensor at each 90 degrees of rotation. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the sensor pulses and flags any misfire events.

When a specified number of misfires occur within a certain time frame (miesk5 note two trips), the powertrain control module will alert the driver to the condition by turning on the CEL.

Yes that is the tone ring/stator for the mis-fire detector as described in the link I posted earlier.
