You are all correct in saying the problem is caused by the coil AND by the transmission. When a coil goes bad (like in my 2001 F-150 supercrew [coil #1]), the engine and transmission are so closely synchronized that it will cause the transmission to slip in and out of "lock up". The loss of power is due to the coil and the shutter is due to the tranny slipping in and out of lock up. It is all about cause and effect.
-not sure if my experience would have a connection here but I used to own a Lincoln Continental that had the "washbord syndrome" on upslopes on the interstate. The unusual thing was that it only occurred when the air conditioner was on (??) I ended up trading before I found out the cause.
Took a long ride up to N.H. this weekend and noticed an odd hesitation / shutter. I noticed this at highway speeds approaching an incline/hill. Just before the truck would down shift, it would bog down/hesitate a bit and shutter a lot probably around 2000-2300 RPM. After down shifting the engine would run fine. Gas mileage for the trip was fine and power seems normal. The plugs and wires have about 20K on them and no check engine lights. Tranny fluid level is OK. The truck is a ’97 F150 XLT 4X4 4.6L engine with 88K miles. Any thoughts?
