Ford's WORST feature IMO. The warning light is small, it is far removed from your peripheral vision (so you pretty much have to be already looking at your mirror to see it. and then who needs it.), and the warning is SO LATE that it does no good. Vehicles are on my tailgate before the light goes off. And if there is any significant difference in closing velocity, you wouldn't have a prayer. They are rather sneaking at concealing the fact that it doesn't work with a fifth wheel. The only worthwhile feature is the cross traffic alert. That does work. All in all, very poorly designed and implemented IMO,
It all works well for me. The cross traffic check when in reverse is handy, as you said.
On my '19 Nissan Leaf, when someone is beside me and I turn on the turn signal the car will beep at me to provide additional warning. I wish my F-350 did that too.
Disagree, in part. It’s not there to warn you of an overtaking vehicle. It’s there to warn you of someone hanging out in your blind spot. Presumably you’ve been scanning your mirrors and have already seen the guy preparing to pass on the right at +30mph.
I just think of it as an additional point of information, but it's not something I fully rely on. Like, if I'm passing somebody, I now look at the mirrors AND the lack of light before pulling over. But I do agree I wish it wouldn't be disabled with the fiver. With the fiver, you'd get false positives, which is better than not having any positives at all.
I like the BLIS. I am on my second vehicle with it, 2012 Explorer and 2020 F350. I like it at night when I'm ready to change lanes and that amber light really sticks out as an aid to alert you of a car in your blind spot. I think this is one of those "love it or hate it" type of options.
Its decent but nowhere near as effective as my Hyundai Sonata. The hyundai has a larger signal in the mirror and its audible when the blinker is on. Also it kicks on well before the car is near my taillights.
It's not all that useful. But this is based upon how you have your mirrors set up. If, from your normal driving position, you can sight right down the side of your vehicle -car or truck- your mirrors are not properly adjusted. I set my lower mirror to fully show the lane next to me and the view of one lane past that so that any vehicle near or on my side will be exposed and it shows a vehicle in the next lane over so I can see if someone is moving into the adjacent lane. The top mirror shows just the full view of the lane to either side.
You should also have situational awareness. Knowing what traffic is around you and where they're moving relative to you helps to reduce surprises. Much harder to accomplish in heavy traffic. But if you don't know for sure there's room for you, just keep your position static.
So, BLIS isn't telling me something I don't already know, and I have never observed the mirror lights.
Maybe it's just in comparison. We have this feature on our Audi. It is WAY more effective. It actually warns of cars coming up upon you. The faster the car is moving past you, the earlier the warning you get. And there is a nice amber light on the door inside the car that you see immediately. That system really keeps you out of trouble.
My first vehicle with it, and I like it. I would never rely solely on a feature like this, so I am looking at the mirrors anyway. Being that I'm checking the mirrors anyway, the size of the light is fine.
The cross traffic alert has saved my butt a few times because it is alerting me tonsomethi I can not possibly see. The only time I notice the little yellow BLIS light is when someone is travelling beside for a longer distance. I never notice it when I’m going to change lanes because I am focused and looking in my mirror for vehicles and not in the corner of my mirror for a little yellow light. If the mirrors are not set up correctly, there can be a small blind spot between the upper mirror and the bottom convex mirror.
If the system had an audible alert for when a vehicle is detected when the signal light is activated, that would be great. BUT, nobody uses there signals lights to lane change anymore. Lol. If they do, they don’t put their signal light on before the lane change, if at all, they put on the signal halfway through the lane change.
I can see the need for vehicles with smaller side view mirrors needing a better system than a truck with gigantic mirrors that are almost equivalent to the size of a 15” laptop (Doug Demuro video reference)
I want to give a shout out the the Americans in this thread that used the term “signal light” instead of “blinker”. Lol. Damn that annoys me. Same thing as calling a remote a clicker. Are you 4yrs old? 😂
