dumb question- I have a drip line down the side of my oil filter the last couple of times changing it. I make sure not to double stack the gaskets, lube the gasket prior to seal and hand tighten then 1/4 turn filter. still I trickle line still appears and stays- I don't get a drip but a line----- filter is tight, no visible leaks above the housing?
what am I missing?

Maybe residual from the lip wipe it off see if it comes back.
Are you pre-filling your filter? Sometimes when pre-filling, a little oil will stay in the top of the filter, and as you spin it on will be "spun" out and look like a "drip". Wipe it off (also around the top edge of the filter). You should be good to go. If it continues, tighten the filter more. If it still continues, seek professional help.

This happens to me just about every time. I prefill the filter and some gets outside the gasket which eventually drips later. During my 1st oil change, I hand tightened the filter and noticed the leak after starting the engine. So I reached under and was able to tighten the filter more which caused me some concern but that condition never repeated.
I had the same issue after my first oil change, no double gasket, thought it was residual oil from refilling filter, made sure it was tight. Would wipe line of oil off filter and it would come back while running. Ended up being the new oil filter gasket was full of cracks like it was dry rotted, and it had been oiled prior me installing. Put a new filter on and no more drip. Now I double check the filter gasket, been changing oil for over 30 years and never saw that. I also only use Motorcraft filters.
I've always used the "spin it on till it makes contact, then 1/4 turn" formula till I did my first oil change and had some leakage. Now I spin it on and hand tighten it to the limits of my physical ability, no more leaks. lol.
Ive only done 3 oil changes on my 6.2 so far. Same thing happened to me 2 out of 3. First time I tightened it a bit more and didnt notice it any more. The second time I tried to hand tighten it a bit more and it was way tight. So I took a rag and wiped it off.... I took a paper towel and went over the lip of the filter and dried up everything I could from the top of the filter. I dont notice any dripping now.
I should also point out I never saw a single drop that made it to the ground. I always look under my vehicles... at the tires and all that every time I walk up to it. 25th years in the trucking business will do that to you.
If it was actually leaking it would keep coming and end up dripping on the ground.
I think its either old oil from the filter block or its from topping off the filter and schmearing the gasket.
Ford dealer oil change I had the same problem. 2 changes in a row and nothing on the ground. Went to local ford Indy shop for the latest oil change and no oily filter. Don’t get it? You might be right in the fact that the ford deadly is sloppy and doesn’t take care when priming the filter and cleaning etc. blow and go I guess! Do it right or don’t do it at all.
I always let mine drain a while. I also pop 2 holes in the filter so it can drain before I unscrew it. One on the bottom and one farther up the side to let vacuum release.
Still the fact that there doesnt seem to be enough to hit the ground indicates no need to worry. In fact I would be more concerned to get drips on the concrete than any possible harm to the truck... even if it did hit the ground.
this was after my dealer oil change on Monday. Got oil under the whole cab after driving off lot, to work, and back home. I wiped everything up to see if it leaks more and sure enough today it had more oil on the filter. Gonna take it back to the dealer and have them fix whatever the issue is and have them clean the underside.
