If you replace the shaft to fit your distributor then it's not going to fit the oil pump. hold a 5/16 " 6 point socket up against the shaft hole in your distributor and see if they don't match. I still don't recall ever seeing a 1/4 drive .
If you're pulling the engine you're going to have a chance to inspect everything. take your heads to a good shop and have them checked out. check your bores and crank. replace the cam, lifters, rods. and mains, cam bearings, soft plugs in addition to what you've already done and suggested. you might luck out and just need a freshen up or you might need everything. at that point you can decide how far you want to go . the sky is the limit but there are some things that aren't optional .

I’ve verified that the distributor oil shaft hole is 1/4 inch. I put a 1/4 inch Allen key in it and it fits like a glove. 5/16 was too big. I verified this on my current dizzy and the old replacement I got with the truck.
I am nearly sure FE's have never had more than one size pump drive. I think I have an FE distributor around here I'll measure. now I'm curious.
Either you have the wrong distributor or the wrong drive shaft if the sizes don't match. in either case if you're correct your oil pump couldn't have been turning . so that grinding noise you heard was your engine destructing.
I'm still going to have to see a 1/4 shaft to believe it. maybe I'm wrong I've actually never measured one I just assumed they were all 5/16.

I'm with you 440 never seen one a 1/4'' went and check the three I have in the shop and ALL are 5/16'' now that being said I haven't worked on an fe in years but I think they all were 5/16'' as is my oil pump priming tool!
I just pulled one from an original '74 390 and it's 1/4 " . I remember replacing the one on my 428 CJ when I rebuilt it because it had some rounding off going on. no wonder with such a small drive . 5/16 is so common I can't believe Ford did this.
So this explains half of your problem but not the other half. are you positive you aren't getting the socket on the pump shaft because it's 5/16" or because your socket isn't fitting through the passage hole ?
