Rear engine seal

The rear seal on my 302 has been leaking for a while and I’m tired of cleaning up the oil on the garage floor, and smelling the odors form where it drips on to the exhaust crossover pipe.
My question is, is it practical to replace the seal with the engine in the truck or just pull it out?

Seal leak

Are you sure the oil is leaking from the rear seal? Remove the cover from the front of the bell housing and check if oil is slinging off the flywheel. If not you may just have to replace the oil pan gasket. Also make sure the rear of the intake manifold is not leaking.

If yours is an 84 then you need to pull the tranny to do the rear main as it will be a one piece. As for pulling the engine or pulling the trans that depends on what you have available for facilities.

A shop will drop the trans. But it may be easier to pull the engine at home. if you do not have AC, then pulling the engine should be the easier IMHO.

If and only if it has a two-piece seal, then you can do it underneath the vehicle. Lots of cussing involved. If it's a one piece, then you must pull the engine and might as well totally reseal.

x2

If you reseal the entire motor you MAW run a hone in each of the cylinders and R/R the rings and bearings. It's a slippery slope.

I pulled the starter off and it sure looks to me it’s the seal, so I decided to pull the engine. It’s been a few years but I still have the transmission jack and engine hoist and stand. I have the seal and a new oil pan gasket

With the virus going around, I will not be going anywhere for a while, so the wife tells me. Now is a good time to get it done.

Oil leak

Since you have a manual transmission the thrust shoulder on the one of the main bearings should be worn so it would be a good time to replace the main bearings.
