Speedometer Drive Gear ratio

I have an 50 F-2 with 700-16 (30" diameter) tires, heavy duty 3-speed stock transmission, and 4.11 rear end. Is there any combination of drive/driven gears that will make the speedometer more accurate? Looking through the 1950 chassis parts catalog, I notice 4.11 isn't listed as an option, so a speedometer gear isn't listed for it.

It currently has the 20 tooth driven gear and 6 tooth drive gear for the 4.86 rear end.

Using an online speedometer calculator, I think an 18 tooth driven gear with 8 tooth drive gear would work. If I tried to keep the existing 6 tooth drive gear, it would need a 16 tooth driven gear, which didn't exist.

So I believe the correct combination would be 01Y-17271-E and -17285-B.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I hope somebody has answers for you. I was unable to come up with a combination for my T98, 3.73 gear and a 32" tire. Not sure what I'm going to do. Hasn't been a priority. I use my phone GPS for now.

I’m almost positive that the 22/8 combination will work. I just wanted to run it by the forum just in case I’m missing something.

I talked to Chuck and he was kind enough to give some advice. He said that the earlier parts books do list the 700-16/4.11 as needing the 23/8 combination.

I checked Coker tires published dimensions (30.4”) vs actual mounted (30.2”). The 22 tooth is right on the money for them.
The 23 tooth seems better for apx a 29.5” tire. So I think I would be fine with either the 22 or 23 tooth driven gear.

I just need to start looking around to see if there are any out there.

Hopefully he chimes in. Neither Van Pelt nor Chuck had one in stock. A new or used one would be fine.

Well I was able to find what I needed. I was less than optimistic since several vendors said they are extremely rare. I think these are the last NOS parts in the entire parts inventory ha. I was able to find the drive gear via Green Sales (thanks Bill!) and I found the driven gears at Connecticut Classic Cars.

So how do you change these in a T98? At some point I want to fix mine since I replaced my 4.88 with a 3.73.
Can you change out the drive gear without dropping the transmission?

Yes, the drive gear slips over the coupling shaft flange. The driven gear is removed by taking the nut off of the bearing retainer and pulling it out through the same hole.

Not sure what I'm going to end up doing. Using an online calculator I need one of these combinations. None are listed together. a 6 tooth with a 14 tooth. A 7 tooth with a 17 tooth or an 8 tooth with a 19 tooth. None of those combinations are listed. There is an 8 tooth gear and a 19 tooth gear available but, they are not a matched pair according to a chart Ross posted for me a while back.

I am concerned of this as well, My 51M3 had a 4;85 in it and its getting replaced with a 3;55 dana, I would put a 3:00 in it if I could.
I freshened a 77 F100,put a 2:75 9"er in er, I remember having a pc of paper magnetted to. the dash with my conversions for actual speed, after awhile it was memerized.,aall was mostly well.

I don’t think it matters whether or not the exact combo is listed in the book. Those are for the tire size and gear sets that were stock at that time. As long as you have the correct model 8 D/01Y/01T etc gears for your transmission, you can make your own combination.

We went with a classic look but modern gauge set. The Speedo is electronic and doesn’t require
a transmission gear set. Just need to calibrate it and it works.

Myers B, If that's the case I should be looking for the 8 and 19 tooth gears. They are both listed in a chart Ross posted, just not together. I was concerned this particular combination might not mesh.

Here is a calculator to determine what you need: https://www.5speeds.com/calculators/SpeedoCalc.html

Shoot, since my emergency brake is on the back of the transmission, it will be a pain to get to the drive gear.
Since I went from 4.88 to 3.54 my 6 tooth drive gear would need a 14 tooth driven gear. I doubt that is available.

Speedometer Cable to fit this gear

I have the same gear in my 1949 F47 (4 speed transmission). The gear is in great shape but the speedometer cable doesn't fit right. Is there a particular cable or cable connector you used for yours? Many thanks.
